Vikings Hand SJU Tennis Another Close Loss, 5-4

SARTELL, Minn. – Division II Augustana (S.D.) edged Saint John's tennis 5-4 on Sunday, March 26, at Sta-Fit in Sartell.

The one-point loss was the fourth for the Johnnies (1-10 overall) this season.

SJU gained a 2-1 lead after doubles competition but managed to win only two of the six singles matches. The Vikings (5-6 overall) won three matches via super-breaker at Nos. 2 (10-7), 3 (10-6) and 6 (10-7).

Junior Tim Larson (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson) dropped his first set 6-2 but battled back with a 7-5 win in the second set and a 10-5 decision in the super-breaker to improve to 6-4 at No. 1 singles.

Freshman Jess Hansen (Dawson, Minn./Dawson-Boyd) won the Johnnies' other singles match in straight sets at No. 5 (6-1, 6-3).

Larson and sophomore Jonah Punnoose (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson) posted an 8-3 victory at No. 1 doubles and the tandem of sophomore Hunter Krebsbach (St. Paul, Minn./Mounds View) and freshman Ben McKimm (Hutchinson, Minn.) registered an 8-4 win at No. 3.

The Johnnies open their new on-campus courts, the Chang Tennis Complex, with a noon match against Macalester on Saturday, April 1, in Collegeville (weather permitting).
