St. Scholastica Edges SJU Tennis Via the Super-Breaker, 5-4

VIRGINIA, Minn. – Saint John's tennis suffered its second one-point loss in as many days with a 5-4 defeat to St. Scholastica on Sunday, Feb. 5, at the Virginia Indoor Tennis Club.

CSS (2-0 overall) won three singles matches via the super-breaker, including the deciding match at No. 5 over freshman Jess Hansen (Dawson, Minn./Dawson-Boyd): 2-6, 6-2 and 10-5. Hansen suffered the deciding loss by super-breaker, 10-8, in the 5-4 loss to Luther (Iowa) yesterday (Feb. 4).

Junior Tim Larson (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson) and sophomore Jonah Punnoose (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson) moved to 2-0 on the year with an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles. Hansen and sophomore Tom Prittinen (Virginia, Minn.) gave SJU (0-2 overall) a 2-1 lead with an 8-4 victory at No. 3.

Punnoose won his match at No. 4 singles in straight sets (6-3 and 6-3), while freshman Ben McKimm (Hutchinson, Minn.) recorded his first dual victory at No. 6: 3-6, 6-4 and 10-3.

Larson and sophomore Ryan Meger (Stillwater, Minn./Mahtomedi) lost at Nos. 1 (10-1) and 2 (10-6) singles, respectively, via the super-breaker.

The Johnnies return to the road for a 1:30 p.m. neutral-site, non-conference match with Grinnell (Iowa) next Sunday, Feb. 12, in Owatonna.
