Johnnies Start MIAC Play With 4-2 Win in Home Opener

Box Score

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – No. 15 Saint John's hockey opened its conference schedule with a 4-2 win over Bethel on Tuesday, Nov. 7, at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center (HBNHC) in St. Cloud.

SJU (5-0, 1-0 MIAC) out-shot the Royals 41-27 and broke open a 2-1 game with a pair of third-period goals. The Johnnies have now out-scored the opposition 9-2 in the third period this season.

Following a scoreless first period, Jackson Purvis gave Bethel (0-5, 0-1 MIAC) a 1-0 lead with a rebound goal, his second of the season, 1:07 into the second frame.

The lead was short-lived, however, as senior Tyler Dunagan (Maple Grove, Minn.) tied it at 1-1, the first of four straight goals by SJU, with his 15th career goal 2:10 later. Senior defenseman Sam Dockry (Burnsville, Minn.), who was playing forward Tuesday night because senior Sam Valerius (Maple Grove, Minn.) and junior Joe Chitwood (Carmel, Ind.) were out due to injury, feathered a pass from in front of the penalty boxes to freshman forward Ryan Kero (Hermantown, Minn.) at the left slot. Kero then found Dunagan for a one-timer at the far post.

Junior Robb Stautz (Roseville, Minn.) gave the home team a 2-1 lead with a power-play goal, from Dunagan and sophomore forward Brady Heppner (Crookston, Minn.), with 28 seconds left in the second period.

Freshman defenseman Jake Dittel (St. Paul, Minn.) tallied his first collegiate goal, a spinning backhander in front of the net, 4:10 into the third period and junior defenseman Sean Lang (Apple Valley, Minn.) made it 4-1 six minutes later. Junior forward Evan Okeley (Carmel, Ind.) assisted on both goals, while Heppner added his second helper of the night on Lang's first goal of the season.

Dallas Marvin ended the game's scoring with a power-play goal for BU with 8:50 remaining. The Royals ended the night 1-for-8 on the power play and totaled seven shots during 10:29 with a man advantage, while SJU went 1-for-5 with nine shots in 6:49.

Sophomore goaltender Andrew Lindgren (Minneapolis, Minn.) made 25 saves to improve to 3-0 on the year (7-4-2 in career).

The Johnnies play host to Hamline (2-2 overall) for a 7 p.m. game this Saturday, Nov. 11, at the HBNHC.
