ST. CLOUD, Minn. – No. 20 Saint John's basketball opened its 2017-18 season with a 94-71 win over St. Scholastica on Friday, Nov. 17, at St. Cloud State's Halenbeck Hall in St. Cloud.
The Johnnies scored the game's first nine points and never looked back, leading by as much as 23 in the first half and 24 in the game, and never trailed.
SJU shot 61.7 percent (37-for-60) from the field, including 64.5 percent (20-for-31) as the Johnnies built a 52-37 halftime lead, and 46.4 percent (13-for-28) from three-point range. Ten different Johnnies scored a point, including seven with a three-pointer.
Sophomore
Jubie Alade (Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong) led all scorers, and four Johnnies in double figures, with 22 points on 10 of 13 shooting. Fifteen of his 22 points came in the first half.
Senior
Tyler Weiss (Shakopee, Minn.) totaled seven points and five rebounds in only six minutes in the first half and finished with his 11th career double-double, 20 points and 11 rebounds.
Junior
David Stokman (Maple Lake, Minn.) followed with 14 points, 11 of which came in the first half, and senior
Garrett Goetz (Rosemount, Minn.) added 10 points and six assists. Stokman also collected five assists and a game-high three blocks.
Sophomore
Lucas Walford (Elko, Minn./New Prague) made all four of his shot attempts for eight points and collected 10 rebounds and two blocks in his SJU debut.
Nate Weets led four Saints in double figures with 16 points.
The Johnnies return to Halenbeck Hall to face Division II St. Cloud State for a 6 p.m. tip-off on Saturday, Nov. 18.
