ST. CLOUD, Minn. – No. 20 Saint John's basketball shot 64 percent (16-for-25) from the field in the second half en route to a 73-67 win at NCAA Division II St. Cloud State on Saturday, Nov. 18.
The Johnnies (2-0 overall) erased a one-point, halftime deficit (32-31) by making five of its first six shots of the second half and built an eight-point lead (45-37). The Huskies (2-2 overall) answered, however, with an 11-2 run to re-gain the lead.
SJU battled back once again, this time with a 12-2 run, to go up by nine (59-50) with 6:45 to play. The Johnnies made five of their final eight shots and went a perfect 5-for-5 from the free-throw line down the stretch to seal the win.
The victory was the Johnnies' third in the last four meetings with the Huskies, who have won 13 of the last 18 games in the series since 2000.
Senior post
Tyler Weiss (Shakopee, Minn.) led all scorers with 18 points and fell one rebound short of his second consecutive double-double. He is now 32 points shy of becoming the 36th Johnnie in school history to reach 1,000 for a career.
Senior guard
Patrick Strom (Fargo, N.D./Shanley) followed with 16 points, on 6 of 7 shooting (4-for-5 from three-point range), and sophomore wing
Jubie Alade (Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong) added 12 points off the bench.
Alade, Strom and Weiss combined to go 11 of 15 from the field and scored 10 points apiece in the second half.
Junior guard
David Stokman (Maple Lake, Minn.) collected 11 points and five rebounds, while senior guard
Garrett Goetz (Rosemount, Minn.) registered four points and seven assists, with no turnovers.
Sophomore post
Lucas Walford (Elko, Minn./New Prague) filled the stat sheet with seven points, 13 rebounds, three assists and three blocks.
Jon Averkamp and Brindley Theisen led SCSU, which shot 39.7 percent (25-for-63) from the field and 25 percent (4-for-16) from behind the arc, with 12 points apiece. Averkamp entered the contest averaging 25.3 points per game.
The Johnnies travel to face Wisconsin-La Crosse for a 7 p.m. game on Wednesday, Nov. 22.
