ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – Saint John's tennis ended its regular-season schedule with a close 5-4 loss to Carleton on Sunday, May 1, at the CSB Tennis Courts in St. Joseph.

The Knights (16-7, 8-1 MIAC) entered the match ranked No. 13 in the Central region, according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (April 28).

SJU (9-8, 5-4 MIAC) swept all three doubles matches but five of the six singles bouts, including two via the super-breaker.

Despite the three-way tie at 5-4 in the MIAC, SJU earns the No. 4 seed and a home MIAC quarterfinal match. The first tie-breaker is head-to-head record, though SJU, Bethel and Macalester all went 1-1 against each other. The second tie-breaker is total individual singles and doubles matches won against the tied teams. The Johnnies defeated Macalester (7-2) and lost to Bethel (5-4) for a total of 11 wins. BU topped SJU (5-4) and lost to the Scots (6-3), so the Royals and MAC again tied with eight match wins apiece. The tie-breaker between Bethel and Macalester then returned to the first tie-breaker (head-to-head record), so the Scots earned the No. 5 seed.

SJU plays host to Macalester in the MIAC Playoff quarterfinal at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 4, at the CSB Tennis Courts in St. Joseph.

Sophomore Tim Larson (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson) improved to 12-4 (8-1 MIAC) with a straight-set victory (6-4, 6-4) at No. 2 singles. He and senior Jack Hansen (Dawson, Minn./Dawson-Boyd) teamed up to post an 8-6 win at No. 1 doubles.

Hansen fought back with a 6-2 win in his second set at No. 1 singles but lost the super-breaker, 10-7.

Senior Andrew Nagel (Maple Grove, Minn.) won his first set at No. 3, but lost the second and the super-breaker by a wild 14-12 score.

Nagel and classmate Ben Lahren (Wausau, Wis./West) won their ninth straight match at No. 2 doubles, 9-7, and are now 9-1 (5-1 MIAC) on the year. The freshman duo of Ryan Meger (Stillwater, Minn./Mahtomedi) and Jonah Punnoose (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson) move their mark to 10-6 (6-3) with an 8-2 win at No. 3.
