Saint John's tennis ends its regular season with a 2 p.m. match with Carleton on Sunday, May 1, at the CSB Tennis Courts in St. Joseph.
FORECAST: Saturday's weather forecast moved the Johnnies' match with Carleton to Sunday. The Johnnies' non-conference match with St. Scholastica, which was originally set for April 24 but rescheduled for May 1, is now canceled.
A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Saint John's (9-7, 5-3 MIAC) returned to the win column with a 9-0 shutout at Hamline last Thursday (April 21) in St. Paul. The Johnnies won seven matches in clean fashion and a pair of singles wins via the super-breaker. Senior
Jack Hansen (Dawson, Minn./Dawson-Boyd) won his first set 6-1 at No. 1, dropped the second and posted a 10-7 win in the super. Senior
Joey Evavold (Andover, Minn./Anoka) lost his first set at No. 5 in a tie-breaker, 7-6 (7-4), only to battle back for a 7-5 win in the second and a 10-2 decision in the super. Sophomore
Tim Larson (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson) recorded the Johnnies' most convincing victory of the day, 6-1 and 6-2, to improve to 11-4 (7-1 MIAC) at No. 2 singles. Seniors
Ben Lahren (Wausau, Wis./West) and
Andrew Nagel (Maple Grove, Minn.) won each of their respective singles matches at Nos. 4 and 3, and started the day with a convincing 8-1 win to improve to 8-1 (4-1 MIAC) at No. 2 doubles.
A LOOK AT THE KNIGHTS: Carleton (15-7, 7-1 MIAC) bounced back from its first conference loss, an 8-1 decision at nationally-ranked Gustavus last Saturday (April 23), with a 5-4 win over St. Thomas Thursday (April 28) night. The Knights are a combined 25-19 (.568) at Nos. 1 and 2 singles, but are 62-26 (.705) at Nos. 3-6. Doubles competition follows the same stat line, as Carleton is 31-35 overall, including a 17-27 (.386) mark at Nos. 1 and 2.
LAST YEAR: SJU ended its 2015 tennis season with a 6-3 loss at Carleton in Northfield. The Johnnies, who finished their season with an 8-10 (3-6 MIAC) record, gained an early 2-1 lead following doubles competition but only won one of the six singles matches. Hansen and Nagel won by an 8-6 score at No. 1 doubles, while Lahren and Larson followed suit with an identical score at No. 2 to finish the season with a 10-2 (8-1 MIAC) record. Larson recorded the Johnnies' lone win in singles play at No. 2 (7-5 and 6-2). Hansen lost at No. 1 via the super-breaker (6-4, 2-6 and 10-7).
SERIES HISTORY: The Johnnies have had their hands full with Carleton in the past, posting a 10-19 series record since 1989. Carleton has won each of the last 15 meetings.
