SJU (12-5 overall) sent 18 men to the plate in the first inning and scored nine runs before the Cougars (5-7 overall) recorded an out. The game was shortened to seven innings due to the 10-run rule.
The Johnnies finished with a school-record 25 hits.
Senior first baseman
Patrick Strey (Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview) went 4-for-6 with two doubles and six RBI in the game, including a 2-for-2 performance with four RBI in the first inning alone.
Senior outfielder
Dan Keller (Vadnais Heights, Minn./White Bear Lake) went 3-for-4 with five RBI, including his first collegiate home run (a three-run shot) in the first inning.
Junior third baseman
Derek Schiebel (Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview) launched a two-run home, the fifth of his career, in the second inning.
Sophomore
Nick Noack (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Westlake) improved to 3-0 on the year with two innings of one-hit relief. Classmate
Ben Etzell (Greenbank, Wash./Coupeville) started the game and allowed four hits in the first three innings.
SJU left 11 men on base but still hit .500 (12-for-24) with runners in scoring position and .528 (19-for-36) with runners on base in the contest.
The Johnnies open conference play with a 1 p.m. doubleheader against Hamline on Saturday, April 2, in Collegeville.
