Game 2 Box ScoreFORT MYERS, Fla. – Saint John's baseball ended its 10-game trip in Fort Myers with a split with Millikin (Ill.) on Friday, March 25.
SJU (11-5 overall) committed three errors and left 10 men on base in game one's 7-5 loss, but bounced back with a 6-3 win in game two to salvage the split.
The Johnnies were without their leading run producer (.354 batting average and 22 RBI), junior third baseman
Derek Schiebel (Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview), who was hit in the hand by a pitch (which was called a strike) and left the first game in the top of the first inning.
The Big Blue (8-3 overall) tacked on four runs in the first two innings of game one and plated two more on a two-out single in the fourth. SJU scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning but left runners on the corners with one out.
Senior shortstop
Logan Hershey (Maple Grove, Minn.) led the Johnnies with three hits in the loss, which was tagged to senior
Patrick Strey (Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview). He allowed the seven runs (four earned) on nine hits. He struck out four and did not walk a batter. Hershey ended the day 4-for-8 at the plate with two doubles.
The Johnnies scored six unanswered runs, including four in the bottom of the sixth inning, to post the 6-3 victory in game two.
Sophomore outfielder
Pat Lloyd (Le Center, Minn./Tri-City United) went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI in his first collegiate start. Senior outfielder
Dan Keller (Vadnais Heights, Minn./White Bear Lake) and freshman second baseman
Cole Weaver (Carlsbad, Calif./Santa Fe Christian) added two hits apiece.
Junior
Alex Kendall (St. Cloud, Minn./Saint John's Prep) improved to 2-1 with the victory. He allowed the three runs on six hits and struck out five (to no walks). Sophomore
Ted Christian (Le Center, Minn./Tri-City United) pitched a scoreless seventh inning to earn his first collegiate save.
The Johnnies play host to Minnesota-Morris for their home opener, a 2:30 p.m. nine-inning game, on Wednesday, March 30, at Saint John's Field in Collegeville.
