Western Connecticut State ResultsKISSIMMEE, Fla. – Saint John's tennis improved to 4-0 on its spring-break trip with a pair of wins on Wednesday, March 23, at Star Island Resort & Club in Kissimmee, Fla.
The Johnnies (7-5, 3-2 MIAC) started the day with a 7-2 win over NAIA Hastings (Neb.) and posted an 8-1 victory over Western Connecticut State in the nightcap.
Senior
Jack Hansen (Dawson, Minn./Dawson-Boyd) won his second consecutive match at No. 1 (6-3, 6-2) and sophomore
Tim Larson (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson) improved to 8-3 at No. 2 (6-0, 6-1) in the win over Hastings (2-10 overall). SJU swept all three doubles matches against the Broncos, who claimed wins at Nos. 3 and 4 singles.
Freshman
Jonah Punnoose (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson) won two matches on the day, the first at No. 6 singles and the other at No. 2, to improve to 9-1 on the year and 4-0 this spring.
The Johnnies went with a fresh lineup, without the likes of its top four players (Hansen, Larson,
Andrew Nagel and
Ben Lahren) against the Colonials (0-4 overall). Freshman
Ryan Meger (Stillwater, Minn./Mahtomedi), who typically represents SJU at No. 5 singles, suffered the Johnnies' lone loss at No. 1.
Senior
Joey Evavold (No. 4; Andover, Minn./Anoka) and freshmen
Tommy Keene (No. 5; Lincoln, Neb./Southwest) and
Tom Prittinen (No. 6; Virginia, Minn.) posted their first wins in singles competition, in their first singles matches, this spring.
The Johnnies wrap up their spring-break trip with a 9 a.m. EDT match against Grinnell (Iowa) on Friday, March 25, in Kissimmee.
