SJU Opens Spring-Break Trip With 5-4 Win

ORLANDO, Fla. – Saint John's tennis opened its five-match, spring-break trip with a 5-4 win over Division II Augustana (S.D.) on Monday, March 21, at the Lake Cane Tennis Center in Orlando, Fla.

SJU (4-5, 3-2 MIAC) gained a 2-1 lead after doubles competition and rattled off three straight wins in singles play to earn the 5-4 victory over the Vikings (7-6 overall).

Seniors Andrew Nagel (Maple Grove, Minn.) and Ben Lahren (Wausau, Wis./West) won their matches at Nos. 3 and 4 singles, respectively, in straight sets.

Freshman Ryan Meger (Stillwater, Minn./Mahtomedi) proved to be the fifth and deciding point with a win at No. 5 via the super-breaker. He lost his first set 6-4 but battled back to win the second, 6-2, and the tie-breaker (10-3).

Lahren and Nagel teamed up for an 8-5 win at No. 2 doubles earlier in the match, while Meger and classmate Jonah Punnoose (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson) posted a 8-5 win of their own at No. 3.

The Johnnies take on Elmhurst (Ill.) at 2 p.m. EDT Tuesday, March 22, at Star Island Resort & Club in Kissimmee, Fla.
