Johnnie Tennis Suffers 7-2 Loss in Season Opener

SARTELL, Minn. – Saint John's tennis opened its 2016 season with a 7-2 loss to Wisconsin-Eau Claire on Saturday, Feb. 6, at Fitness Evolution in Sartell.

Sophomore Tim Larson (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson) won the Johnnies' lone match in singles competition at No. 2, 6-4 and 6-2. The other five singles matches all had a set decided by a 7-5 score. Freshman Hunter Krebsbach (St. Paul, Minn./Mounds View) won his first set 7-5 but dropped the second (7-4) and super-breaker (10-5) at No. 6.

Larson and senior Ben Lahren (Wausau, Wis./West) teamed up for an 8-6 victory at No. 2 doubles. The duo posted a 10-2 record (8-1 MIAC) en route to All-MIAC honors last year. 

SJU was denied a 2-1 lead when the freshman tandem of Ryan Meger (Stillwater, Minn./Mahtomedi) and Jonah Punnoose (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson) suffered a narrow 9-8 (7-5) loss at No. 3.

The Blugolds (2-0 overall) opened its season with a 5-4 win over Division II St. Cloud State earlier in the day.

The Johnnies open conference play with a pair of home matches next weekend, beginning with a 4 p.m. match against Gustavus Adolphus on Saturday, Feb. 13, in Sartell. SJU then hosts Concordia-Moorhead for a 1 p.m. match on Sunday, Feb. 14.
