Johnnies Earn Key Tennis Win Over St. Olaf, 5-4

OWATONNA, Minn. – Saint John's tennis won two singles matches via the super-breaker in a 5-4 victory at St. Olaf on Friday, Feb. 19, at the West Hills Tennis & Fitness Center in Owatonna.

The regular-season win was the first for SJU (2-2, 2-1 MIAC) over the Oles since 2008 (7-2 in Owatonna). The Oles (2-1, 0-1 MIAC) defeated Wisconsin-La Crosse, which is ranked No. 13 in the Central Region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), by a 5-4 score in their season opener Feb. 12. 

Freshman Hunter Krebsbach (St. Paul, Minn./Mounds View) clinched the victory for SJU with a nerve-wracking 6-2, 5-7 and 10-7 win at No. 6 singles. Sophomore Tim Larson (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson) posted the Johnnies' first win via the super-breaker at No. 2: 4-6, 6-1 and 11-9.

Senior Ben Lahren (Wausau, Wis./West) and freshman Ryan Meger (Stillwater, Minn./Mahtomedi) posted straight-set wins at Nos. 4 and 5, respectively.

STO (2-1, 0-1 MIAC) jumped out to a 2-1 lead after doubles competition. The tandem of Lahren and Larson improved to 3-1 (2-1 MIAC) with an 8-5 win at No. 2.

The Johnnies return home to host Division II Michigan Tech for a 2 p.m. match on Saturday, Feb. 20, at Fitness Evolution in Sartell.
