Super-Breakers Fall in SJU's Favor vs. Macalester

SARTELL, Minn. – Saint John's tennis started a six-match homestand with a 5-4 win over Macalester on Sunday, March 29, at Fitness Evolution in Sartell. 

The 5-4 decision was the sixth consecutive in the series between the two programs (3-3 record).

SJU (6-5, 2-2 MIAC) went 2-1 in doubles competition against the Scots (6-5, 1-2 MIAC) and won three singles matches, including two via the super-breaker.

Junior Jack Hansen (Dawson, Minn./Dawson-Boyd) won his fifth straight match at No. 1 singles, 6-2 and 6-3. He is now 8-6 on the year and a spotless 4-0 in league play.

Junior Ben Lahren (Wausau, Wis./West) won his first match at No. 4 this season, after going 5-1 at No. 5, thanks to a 10-3 decision in the super-breaker.

Sophomore Steven Wirtz (Overland Park, Kan./Bishop Miege) battled back from a 6-3 loss in the first set to win his match at No. 5, 6-3 and 10-7 in the super-breaker.

Lahren and freshman Tim Larson (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson) improved to 5-0 (4-0 MIAC) at No. 2 doubles with an 8-3 victory, while Wirtz and junior Tanner Rayman (Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley) won at No. 3, 8-4.

The Johnnies continue MIAC action with a 1 p.m. match against Bethel on Saturday, April 11, at the CSB Tennis Courts in St. Joseph (weather permitting).
