A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Saint John's (3-3, 0-0 MIAC) dropped a pair of matches to Iowa schools last weekend, falling to Wartburg by a 4-1 score Sept. 13 and to No. 10 Loras, 2-1 the following day. Sophomore
Jake Anderson (Lewis Center, Ohio/Olentangy) tied Saturday's match at 1-1 with his first collegiate goal, but the Knights struck fast to regain the lead three minutes later and delivered another blow to the Johnnies 1:05 after that. SJU took a 1-0 lead over the nationally-ranked Duhawks into halftime on Sunday, but Loras scored two goals, 14 seconds apart, to earn the win.
1,500: Senior
Zane Heinselman's (River Falls, Wis.) goal, the 15th of his career, against Loras was the SJU soccer program's 1,500th in 48 seasons (to 862 goals allowed).
A LOOK AT THE PIPERS: Hamline (3-2-1, 0-0-0 MIAC) took an undefeated record to Washington last weekend and left with a pair of shutout losses. The Pipers battled with Puget Sound (Wash.) to a one-goal deficit for 75 minutes before the Loggers put the match away with two goals in a seven-minute span. It was much of the same for HU against Pacific Lutheran (Wash.) the following day, as a 1-0 deficit turned into a 4-0 loss with three goals allowed in the second half. Senior Derrick Mora is 3-1-1 with a 0.83 GAA and a .826 save percentage (19 saves).
LAST YEAR'S MATCH: SJU opened last year's MIAC schedule with a 2-1 victory at Hamline on Sept. 18 in St. Paul.
Michael Coborn '14 gave the visitors a 1-0 lead with his fourth goal of the year 2:55 into the second half. Junior
Robert Deetz (Owatonna, Minn.) made it 2-0 with a breakaway goal, the first of his collegiate career, in the 66th minute (65:28). Hamline cut it to 2-1 on a penalty kick from Jake Niemann with 17:01 remaining. Junior goalkeeper
Kevin Lebahn (New Hope, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's) made four saves to earn his first win of the season.
SERIES HISTORY: The Johnnies are 28-4-3 (.843) against the Pipers since 1981, including a 14-1-2 record on the home pitch. SJU begins the conference schedule needing 17 goals to reach 1,000, in program history, in MIAC play.
MIAC OPENERS: Since 1981, the Johnnies are 22-8-2 (.719) in the MIAC opener, including a 12-5-1 record when the first conference match is in Collegeville, and 9-0 when SJU opens the league schedule against the Pipers.
