SJU Retains the Cup With 6-3 Win Over St. Thomas

RAMSEY, Minn. – The nationally-ranked Saint John's golf team defeated St. Thomas 6-3 in a dual match (modified match play), the annual Johnnie-Tommie Cup, on Friday, May 2, at the Links at Northfork (par 72) in Ramsey.

Junior Drew Lynch (Stillwater, Minn.) earned medalist honors with a three-under par 69 for No. 20 SJU, which would have carded a 289 (+1) in a typical dual/team format.

Junior Brett Draxler (Plymouth, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's) and freshman Ryan Gallagher (Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View) followed with a one-over par 73 each, while seniors Tommy Koehler (Eden Prairie, Minn.) and Casey Vangsness (Alexandria, Minn.), the reigning MIAC Co-Athletes of the Week, tied with a pair of 74's (+2).

Freshman Morgan Rask (Ostego, Minn./Rogers) joined Koehler and Vangsness with a 74 and classmate Charlie Kretschmer (Wabasha, Minn./Winona Cotter) tallied a 75 (+3).

Jack Riester led the Tommies, ranked No. 25 nationally, with a one-under par 71 and Alex Kapraun added a 73.

The Johnnies are next in action at the NCAA Division III Championship, their 14th national-tournament appearance, May 13-16 at Grandover Resort in Greensboro, N.C.
