Saint John's plays host to Concordia-Moorhead for a 2:30 p.m. doubleheader today and travels to Macalester for a pair of games tomorrow (Tuesday, April 22) in St. Paul. – Live Audio/Live Stats (Tuesday)

A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Saint John's (14-5, 6-4 MIAC) settled for another conference split at Carleton on Saturday (April 19) in Northfield. The Johnnies obliterated a 2-0 deficit with nine runs on six hits in a 9-2 win in game one, but totaled only five hits and batted 1-for-15 with runners on base, 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position, in a 3-1 loss in game two. Sophomore Joe Stanton (Stillwater, Minn.) went the distance in game one, allowing the two runs on seven hits. He struck out two and walked two to improve to 3-1 on the year. The Johnnies' top of the order (Aaron Pfaff, Logan Hershey, Dylan Graves) combined to go 7-for-13 with five RBI and four runs scored at the plate in game two, but 0-for-12 in the nightcap.

Senior first baseman Tony Gazich (Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View) started the second inning of game two with a double, advanced to third on a groundout from Larson and scored on a wild pitch. The Knights strung together three straight hits to start the fourth and score two runs to gain the lead, then did it again in the sixth to plate the third and final run. Junior Collin Felhaber (North St. Paul, Minn.) was saddled with the loss, his first of the year (3-1), by allowing the three runs (two earned) on nine hits. He struck out five and walked one in six innings. Junior Jack Hamilton (Minnetonka, Minn./Hopkins) and freshman Derek Graves (Mora, Minn.) combined for two innings of scoreless relief. Senior outfielder Tom Druk (Plymouth, Minn./Orono) and sophomore catcher Gabe MacDonald (Minneapolis, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's) led SJU with two hits apiece in game two as the Johnnies left nine men on base and went 0-for-10 with two outs.

WINS & LOSSES: The anatomy of SJU's wins (14) and losses (5) this spring are obvious, according to the batting statistics. In the wins, SJU batted .355 with runners on base, .387 with runners in scoring position and .326 with two outs. In the five losses, however, the Johnnies batted only .183 (13-for-71) with runners on base, .174 (8-for-46) with runners in scoring position and .143 (7-for-49) with two outs.

PLAY BALL: After five days off (from April 13 to April 19), the Johnnies will play three conference doubleheaders in four days.

700: SJU head coach Jerry Haugen enters today's doubleheader three wins shy of 700 for his career (697-588-5 record). Concordia's Bucky Burgau became the 25th coach in NCAA Division III history to reach the 700-win plateau earlier this season on March 28 and has a 705-614-6 career record.

A LOOK AT THE COBBERS: Concordia (12-11, 4-6 MIAC) swept Augsburg Friday (April 18) with a pair of 4-2 scores, including a nine-inning victory in game one, but dropped a pair of games at nationally-ranked St. Thomas the following day (April 19), 9-8 (eight innings) and 14-1. Senior Jordan Gefroh leads the Cobbers in batting (.406), doubles (7) and extra-base hits (12). CC is batting .309 on the year and has only hit into four double plays in 23 games. The pitching staff, meanwhile, has a 5.90 ERA and allows a .300 average at the plate.

LAST YEAR'S MEETINGS: SJU left a combined 20 men on base in a pair of one-run losses, 3-2 and 5-4 in nine innings, to Concordia last April 7 (2013) at the new Saint John's Field in Collegeville. The Johnnies out-hit Concordia 4-3 but left 10 men on base in game one before allowing two runs in the bottom of the ninth to suffer their third extra-inning loss of the season in game two. The doubleheader was originally scheduled for April 6 in Moorhead but was moved to Collegeville due to field conditions. SJU left the bases loaded in the eighth inning of game two and loaded them again in the ninth, but scored only one run on a sac fly from Dylan Graves to take a 4-3 lead into the bottom half of the inning. Concordia batted .173 (9-for-52) on the day.

SERIES HISTORY: The Johnnies are 24-28 against Concordia since 1989, including a 9-13 record in Collegeville. Four of SJU's last five losses in the series were decided by two runs or less.

A LOOK AT THE SCOTS: Macalester (10-18, 3-11 MIAC) saw its four-game win streak, which included a sweep at Gustavus Adolphus Friday (April 18), come to an end with a pair of losses at Saint Mary's on Saturday (April 19), 13-3 and 10-5. The Scots play host to Wisconsin-Superior for a non-conference doubleheader today before hosting SJU Tuesday. Junior Tom Forster leads the team in nearly every offensive category: average (.449), runs (23), hits (40), doubles (9), triples (5), extra-base hits (15), walks (17) and RBI (24). The rest of the team, however, is batting .278. The Scots' pitching staff has a 7.98 ERA with 162 walks to 161 strikeouts and allows a .314 batting average. Mac has also committed 66 errors in 28 games (.931 fielding percentage).

LAST YEAR: SJU took advantage of Macalester's miscues in a doubleheader sweep of the Scots, 10-6 and 4-3, last May 3 (2013) in Collegeville. Like their doubleheader with the Cobbers two months earlier, the Johnnies were the visiting team in both games, despite the home-field, after the doubleheader was moved to Collegeville due to poor field conditions. SJU gained a 7-0 lead with seven unearned runs with two outs in the top of the second inning. Macalester, however, answered with six runs on five hits in the bottom half of the inning. A one-out double by Joey Long '13 in the third and RBI singles from sophomore Logan Hershey (Maple Grove, Minn.) and junior Aaron Pfaff (New Ulm, Minn./Cathedral) tacked on two more runs. Senior Luke Larson (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson) started the fifth with a triple and scored on a passed ball to end the scoring for both teams. Max Forster '13 earned the win, his first since April 21, 2011. He allowed six runs, three earned, on seven hits in six innings of work. Pfaff started game two with a leadoff single and scored on a wild pitch to give SJU an early 1-0 lead. Mac manufactured a run in the third inning to tie it at 1-1 before the Johnnies answered with three in the top of the fifth. Hershey and junior Brett Becker (North Oaks, Minn./Mounds View) started the inning with back-to-back singles. The Scots' third baseman threw Pfaff's sacrifice-bunt attempt into their own bullpen, scoring both baserunners. Pfaff, who advanced to third on the play, scored on a sac fly in the next at-bat. Pfaff ended the day 3-for-7 with three runs scored and two RBI, while Hershey and Gazich recorded two hits apiece.

SERIES HISTORY: The Johnnies are 35-8 against Macalester since 1993, including a 15-3 record in St. Paul. Tuesday's doubleheader is SJU's first at Nicholson Field since 2010 (W, 9-7 and W, 9-0).
