OWATONNA, Minn. – Saint John's tennis opened its 2014 season with a split against Division II Augustana (S.D.) and Grinnell (Iowa), both by a 7-2 score, on Saturday, Feb. 8, in Owatonna.
SJU swept all three doubles matches, including a 9-8 (7-4) victory at No. 1 by sophomores
Jack Hansen (Dawson, Minn./Dawson-Boyd) and
Andrew Nagel (Maple Grove, Minn.), in the win against Augustana. Hansen won his match at No. 2 singles (6-4-, 6-3) and senior
Connor Rust (Rochester, Minn./Lourdes) went to the super-breaker to win his bout at No. 3 (6-1, 1-6, 10-2). Junior
Jordan Otto (Rice, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral) and senior
Alex Wiegmann (Sunburg, Minn./New London-Spicer) combined to allow only three match points in their wins at Nos. 5-6 singles, respectively.
The tide turned, however, in the nightcap against Grinnell. Senior
Joe Laue (St. Louis Park, Minn./Holy Angels) put SJU on the scoreboard with a win at No. 2 singles via the super-breaker (6-2, 0-6, 10-5). Rust earned his second win of the day, via the super-breaker once again, at No. 3 (6-0, 4-6, 10-5).
The Johnnies return to action with a 3 p.m. match against Division II St. Cloud State on Tuesday, Feb. 18, at Fitness Evolution in Sartell.
