COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – No. 5 St. Thomas batted .519 (14-for-27) with runners in scoring position and tallied multiple runs in six of the 14 innings in a doubleheader sweep, 16-3 and 10-1, at Saint John's on Thursday, April 25, in Collegeville.
The Tommies (18-4, 6-0 MIAC) strung together four consecutive two-out hits, led by Tyler Peterson's solo homer with a 0-2 count, to gain a 2-0 lead in game one. UST added another run in the second before SJU (10-11, 1-5 MIAC) cut its deficit to 3-2 with a pair of runs in the third but left the bases loaded. Sophomore Geno Larkin (Eden Prairie, Minn.) started the inning with a double, his first collegiate extra-base hit. He scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of senior Alex Powell (Hopkins, Minn.), who tallied the Johnnies' second run on a double from junior Dylan Graves (Mora, Minn.).
UST answered with seven runs on five extra-base hits in the fourth inning and added six more in the fifth. SJU ended the scoring with an unearned run in the sixth.
Sophomore Tyler Delwiche (Andover, Minn./Totino-Grace) took the loss in his second varsity start, allowing eight runs on seven hits in 3.1 innings. Freshman Patrick Strey (Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview) and sophomore Kurt Jantscher (Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong) combined for two hitless innings of relief.
The Tommies jumped on sophomore Jack Hamilton (Minnetonka, Minn./Hopkins), his first varsity start, for three first-inning runs in game two and added four more in the third. The Johnnies' lone run came in the fifth. Jantscher started the inning with his first collegiate triple and scored on a groundout off the bat of junior Joe Lampe (Osceola, Iowa/Clarke).
SJU travels to face Hamline for a 1:30 p.m. doubleheader Saturday, April 27, at Midway Stadium in St. Paul.
Notes: SJU batted .176 (9-for-51) on the day…UST scored 26 runs on 27 hits, including 13 extra-base hits (nine doubles and four home runs)…the Johnnies allowed two extra-base hits in their first four MIAC games this spring (vs. Concordia-Moorhead and Saint Mary's).
