Saint John's returns to non-conference play with a 4 p.m. match against St. Scholastica on Tuesday, April 23, at Fitness Evolution in Sartell.
A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Saint John's (5-11, 5-3 MIAC) avenged last year's one-point loss to Macalester with a 5-4 win over the Scots on April 21, completing a 2-1 weekend. The win guaranteed the Johnnies at worst the fifth seed in the six-team MIAC Tournament May 3-4 in St. Peter. SJU started the match with two wins in three doubles matches, the lone loss resulting from a 7-4 decision in the tie-breaker at No. 1. Senior Fabricio Moncada (Managua, Nicaragua/Lincoln International Academy) continued his winning ways at No. 1 singles, posting a 6-0 and 6-1 win. He is now 17-5 overall and 12-4 (7-1 MIAC) at No. 1. Macalester gained a 4-3 lead with wins at Nos. 2-4 singles before a pair of seniors clinched the victory for SJU. Zach Shriwise (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley West) battled back from a 6-2 loss in the first set at No. 5 to record a 6-0 shutout in the second and a 10-8 win in the super-breaker. Willie Paul (Duluth, Minn./Marshall) tallied a pair of 6-4 scores at No. 6 to seal the win for the Johnnies. Both Paul and Moncada are riding five-match win streaks and boast 7-1 records in conference play.
A LOOK AT THE SAINTS: St. Scholastica (17-7, 9-0 UMAC) cruised to its sixth consecutive 9-0 victory, and 10th overall, April 21 over Minnesota-Morris. The Saints boast a 52-2 UMAC record in singles competition and a 26-1 mark in doubles competition on the year. Junior Nick Lambrecht leads four CSS players in double-digits with 15 wins overall (15-6 record). Scholastica is a combined 74-22 (.771) overall at Nos. 3-6 singles.
LAST YEAR'S MEETING: Saint John's defeated St. Scholastica 6-3 last Feb. 12 (2012) in Duluth. Moncada tallied a win at No. 1 singles and junior Connor Rust (Rochester, Minn./Lourdes) won in straight sets at No. 4 singles. Shriwise and Paul earned wins via the super-breaker at Nos. 5 and 6, respectively. Moncada teamed up with junior Joe Laue (St. Louis Park, Minn./Holy Angels) for the Johnnies' lone win in doubles competition, 8-2 at No. 2.
