SARTELL, Minn. – Saint John's avenged last year's one-point loss to Macalester with a 5-4 win over the Scots on Sunday, April 21, at Fitness Evolution in Sartell.
The win guarantees the Johnnies (5-11, 5-3 MIAC) at worst the fifth seed in the six-team MIAC Tournament May 3-4 in St. Peter.
SJU started the match with two wins in three doubles matches, the lone loss resulting from a 7-4 decision in the tie-breaker at No. 1.
Senior Fabricio Moncada (Managua, Nicaragua/Lincoln International Academy) continued his winning ways at No. 1 singles, posting a 6-0 and 6-1 win. He is now 17-5 overall and 12-4 (7-1 MIAC) at No. 1.
Macalester (7-7, 2-4 MIAC) gained a 4-3 lead with wins at Nos. 2-4 singles before a pair of seniors clinched the victory for SJU. Zach Shriwise (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley West) battled back from a 6-2 loss in the first set at No. 5 to record a 6-0 shutout in the second and a 10-8 win in the super-breaker. Willie Paul (Duluth, Minn./Marshall) tallied a pair of 6-4 scores at No. 6 to seal the win for the Johnnies. Both Paul and Moncada are riding five-match win streaks and boast 7-1 records in conference play.
SJU hosts St. Scholastica for a non-conference match at 4 p.m. Tuesday, April 23, at Fitness Evolution.
