A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Saint John's (7-6-3, 5-2-2 MIAC) strengthened its postseason chances with a 2-0 win over Saint Mary's Oct. 26 in Collegeville. Following a scoreless first half, sophomore Alex Niederloh (Maple Grove, Minn.) gave SJU a 1-0 lead with 16:31 remaining; his second game-winning goal of the season. Junior Zane Heinselman (River Falls, Wis.) took advantage of an SMU turnover near midfield and found Niederloh in the middle of the box. Freshman Rocky Harmon (Hudson, Wis.) ended the scoring with his second goal of the year on a penalty kick with 1:52 left. Senior Ryan Brutger (St. Cloud, Minn./Apollo) made one save to earn his milestone 10th win and seventh shutout of his career.
MIAC RACE: Saint John's needs a tie or win Saturday to earn its second consecutive trip to the four-team MIAC Playoffs (or a loss and an Augsburg loss at home to St. Thomas Saturday night). The Johnnies needed both Augsburg (at St. Olaf) and St. Thomas (vs. Carleton) to either tie or lose Oct. 29 to clinch a postseason berth. The Tommies fell 2-1 in overtime, but Augsburg earned a 1-0 win at St. Olaf. SJU owns the head-to-head tie-breaker with the Auggies thanks to its 1-0 win Oct. 19 in Minneapolis.
BALDER EARNS HONOR: Senior defender Joe Balder (Stillwater, Minn.) was named to the Capital One Academic All-District VI men's soccer team Oct. 31. A Hispanic studies and management double-major with a 3.71 GPA, Balder is a two-year team captain and a two-time Academic All-MIAC honoree (minimum 3.50 GPA). He missed the first four matches of the 2013 season due to a torn hip flexor and started eight matches before suffering a season-, and career-ending, leg injury (broken fibula and tibia) against Bethel Oct. 12. Balder totaled 18 points (6g/6a), including two game-winning goals, in 55 career matches for SJU. He advances to the Academic All-America team ballot, which is scheduled to be announced Friday, Nov. 22.
61: Harmon's penalty kick against Saint Mary's Oct. 26 was the first for the Johnnies at home since Oct. 29, 2005 (Kellen Groves in the 5-0 win over Concordia-Moorhead), ending a 0-for-5 streak (0-2 in 2010 and 0-3 in 2008); a span of 61 home matches.
4-0-2: SJU is 4-0-2 record in the MIAC since surrendering four second-half goals to Gustavus Adolphus in a 4-0 loss Sept. 28.
A LOOK AT THE COBBERS: Concordia (5-11-1, 2-7-0 MIAC) conceded a goal in the 61st minute and then another with two seconds remaining in a 2-0 loss at home to Macalester Oct. 29. Freshman goalkeeper Ben Glogoza made two saves in the loss. He is 3-1-1 with a 1.11 GAA and a .794 save percentage (27 saves), while senior Peter Runquist is 2-10-0 with a 2.19 GAA and a .721 save percentage (62 saves). Freshman Brett Wegleitner leads the team in goals (11) and points (23), while freshman Sage Thornbrugh touts a team-leading seven assists and is second with 11 points.
LAST YEAR: Saint John's punched its ticket to the MIAC Playoffs with a convincing 5-0 win over Concordia in the home and regular-season finale last Oct. 27 in Collegeville. SJU scored four goals on its first five shots on net. Junior Ian Scudder (Sherwood, Ore.) tallied his ninth goal of the year, 5:15 after the Johnnies' first goal to make it 5-0. Balder made it 3-0 with a goal off a free kick 40 seconds later. Junior David Wee (Savage, Minn./Prior Lake) recorded his seventh goal of the season 6:23 into the second half. Junior Josh Whitaker (Milwaukie, Ore.) ended the scoring with his fourth goal of season at the 77:58 mark. Sophomore Kevin Lebahn (New Hope, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's) made seven saves in goal before being relieved at the 79:50 mark.
SERIES HISTORY: SJU leads the series with a 17-7-2 record since 1987, including a 10-1-1 record in Moorhead. The Johnnies have won 10 of the last 11 meetings with the Cobbers overall.
