The Johnnie soccer team makes a brief return to non-conference play with a 4 p.m. match today against Wisconsin-Superior at Haws Field in Collegeville.
A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Saint John's (4-5-2, 2-2-1 MIAC) earned a hard-fought 1-1 tie at Carleton this past Saturday (Oct. 5) in Northfield. Junior Zane Heinselman (River Falls, Wis.) dribbled into the box and beat the Carleton goalkeeper straight on for his second goal of the season, 11th of his career, to give SJU a 1-0 lead 16:51 into the match. Jordan Cammarota tied the match at 1-1 for Carleton in the 31st minute (30:52). Sophomore Kevin Lebahn (New Hope, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's) made seven saves in the tie as the Knights out-shot the Johnnies 26-5 overall (8-1 on goal).
A LOOK AT THE YELLOWJACKETS: Wisconsin-Superior (6-4-2, 1-0-1 WIAC) travels to Collegeville with a 4-0-1 record in its last five matches, out-scoring its opponents 11-1, since losing 2-0 at Macalester Sept. 13. Junior forward Brian Grand leads the team in all three offensive categories: goals (5), assists (4) and points (14). Junior Matt Elder is 5-3-2 with a 1.04 GAA and a .833 save percentage (50 saves) in net. UWS is currently 3-3 against MIAC schools this fall: vs. Concordia (W, 3-0); at Augsburg (L, 1-3); vs. Gustavus Adolphus at Oshkosh, Wis. (L, 1-2 OT); vs. Hamline (W, 2-1); at Macalester (L, 0-2); and at Bethel (W, 1-0).
THE LAST MEETING: Saint John's suffered its first loss of the season, 2-0 to Wisconsin-Superior last Sept. 9 (2012) in Duluth. The loss was the third match in three days for the Johnnies. Ben Royce gave the Yellowjackets a 1-0 lead at the 30:49 mark of the match and Gabriel Storck da Silva added another with 12:22 remaining. Senior Ryan Brutger (St. Cloud, Minn./Apollo) made four saves in the loss. Superior held a 15-11 advantage in shots, though the Johnnies posted a 7-4 edge on goal.
SERIES HISTORY: The Johnnies are 2-1-1 all-time against Superior, with each match held in a different location: W, 2-1 (2007 in Moorhead); T, 1-1 (2010 in Superior, Wis.); W, 2-0 (2011 in Collegeville); and last year's 2-0 loss in Duluth.
