The SJU soccer travels to face Macalester for a 7:30 p.m. match tonight at Macalester Stadium in St. Paul. – Live Video
A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Saint John's (3-5-1, 1-2-0 MIAC) aims to get back in the win column following its 4-0 loss to Gustavus Adolphus on Sept. 28 in Collegeville. The Gusties scored four second-half goals, including two in the first 3:27 following intermission. GAC out-shot SJU 19-14, but shots-on-goal were even at 10 apiece. Sophomore Kevin Lebahn (New Hope, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's) made six saves in the loss.
A LOOK AT THE SCOTS: Macalester (5-4-1, 1-1-1 MIAC) is 5-1-1 in its last seven games after starting the season with three straight losses. Augsburg stopped the Scots' match streak without a loss at six with a 2-1 decision Sept. 28 in St. Paul. Freshman Alan Schembri-Wismayer leads the team in goals (3) and points (7), while sophomore Dylan Wong and freshman Robert Tomeck are tied for the team-lead with three assists apiece. Freshman Zeke Vainer is 4-3-1 with a 1.11 GAA and a .719 save percentage (23 saves) in net.
LAST YEAR'S MEETING: Then-sophomore Ian Scudder (Sherwood, Ore.) tallied two goals, his fifth and sixth in the last three matches, as the host Johnnies blanked Macalester 3-0 last Oct. 17 (2012) in Collegeville. Scudder gave SJU a 1-0 lead three minutes into the match, with assists going to senior Michael Coborn (St. Cloud, Minn./Cathedral), the first of three on the night, and junior David Wee (Savage, Minn./Prior Lake). Wee and Coborn created a mini breakaway for Scudder, the reigning MIAC Athlete of the Week, to make it 2-0 at the 26:46 mark. Wee ended the scoring with his sixth goal of the season 2:52 into the second half. Coborn split the Macalester defense, chipped it ahead to Scudder who then found Wee all alone in front. Lebahn made five saves to earn his second career shutout and improve to 4-4-1 on the year. The win snapped the Johnnies' three-match losing streak to the Scots.
SERIES HISTORY: The Johnnies are 18-15-2 against Mac since 1981, including an 8-7-2 record in St. Paul. SJU has been shut out eight times and held to a total of seven goals in its last 13 matches at Macalester (since 1988).
