EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – No. 3 Wisconsin-Eau Claire ended Saint John's five-game winning streak with a 5-1 win on Friday, Jan. 4, in Eau Claire, Wis.
Following a scoreless and even-played first period, UWEC (12-2-1, 7-2-1 NCHA) erupted for three even-strength goals in a 5:26 span of the second period.
Senior Jascha Pettit (Wadena, Minn.) cut the deficit to 3-1 with a power-play goal with 2:27 left in the second. Junior Justin Hochsprung (Alexandria, Minn.) and sophomore John Haeg (Lakeville, Minn.) assisted on the goal, which was Pettit's sixth of the season. Pettit now has a point in each of his last seven games (6g/4a), while Haeg's point streak moves to six games (3g/7a) for SJU.
The Blugolds capitalized on an SJU turnover, just as a Johnnie power play ended, and added a power-play goal 1:38 later.
Freshman Saxton Soley (Elk Mound, Wis.) made 26 saves for SJU (6-5-1, 1-3-0 MIAC).
Eau Claire entered the game fifth in all of Division III with an average of 4.86 goals scored per game and eighth on the power play at 29.6 percent (16-for-54).
The Johnnies were 1-for-3 on the power play to improve to 20 percent on the season (9-for-45), while the Blugolds were 1-for-2.
SJU ends the non-conference portion of its schedule with a 7:05 p.m. game at Wisconsin-River Falls Saturday, Jan. 5.
