A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Augsburg tallied the game-winning goal with 2:36 left in regulation to defeat SJU 2-1 this past Wednesday in Collegeville. SJU (3-4-2, 1-2-0 MIAC) caught a bad bounce early and found itself down 1-0 with 6:54 taken off the clock. The Auggies' Danny Osip blooped a free kick from 40 yards out and freshman Kevin Lebahn (New Hope, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's) nearly came out of the box to catch it. The ball, however, bounced off Lebahn's hands and deflected behind him, directly to a wide open Grant Griffin. The Johnnies tied it at 1-1 with a goal from sophomore David Wee (Savage, Minn./Prior Lake). Classmate Ian Scudder (Sherwood, Ore.) dribbled through the heart of a physical Augsburg defense and unleashed a shot that was blocked, but the deflection went directly to Wee, who was all alone to the left of the goal. The match became very physical in the second half, as the two teams combined for four yellow cards and 17 fouls after halftime (33 fouls and five yellow cards in the game). AUG's Josh Sweeney drove a low-lying corner kick to the near post, where Chad Gilmer made a diving header to the back of the net for the game-winning tally. Lebahn made six saves in the loss, as shots were nearly even at 16-15 in favor of Augsburg (6-6 on corner kicks).
A LOOK AT THE OLES: Four different Oles scored in a 4-0 win over Hamline 4-0 Wednesday. Aaron Stets, Torbjorn Morkeberg and Ryan Johnsrud scored after the break to add to Kenzie Lund's opener. Lund got the Oles (5-3-1, 2-0-1 MIAC) started in the sixth minute with his second goal of the year. He took a feed from Paul Benz and hit a right-footed shot into the lower left corner of the net. Stets made it 2-0 seven minutes into the second half following a nice combination with David Rosenthal. Rosenthal and Stets exchanged passes and Rosenthal's shot fell into the path of Stets who finished into an empty net. Rosenthal was the provider for St. Olaf's third goal, which came from Morkeberg. Rosenthal now has six assists on the year. Johnsrud capped the scoring in the 74th minute. After receiving the ball from Claudio Barboza, Johnsrud cut in from the right and unleashed a left-footed laser into the top left corner. St. Olaf outshot Hamline 19-4 in the game, including 11-2 in shots on goal. Rosenthal leads the team with 14 points (4g/6a). Senior Harry Ullmann has a 1.01 GAA and a .769 save percentage in net (5-3-1 record).
SERIES HISTORY: The Johnnies are 22-9-2 against St. Olaf since 1981, including an 8-4-2 record in Northfield. SJU is 3-1-1 against the Oles in the last five meetings, including a 1-0 win last fall in Collegeville.
THE LAST MEETING: Junior Matt Carson's (Waconia, Minn.) first collegiate goal in the 74th minute proved to be the game-winner as SJU upset then-No. 18 St. Olaf last season in Collegeville. Junior Michael Coborn (St. Cloud, Minn./Cathedral) dribbled the ball around the left end and centered a shot to sophomore Zane Heinselman (River Falls, Wis.), who then ricocheted a shot off an Ole directly to Carson. Junior Ryan Brutger (St. Cloud, Minn./Apollo) made seven saves for his second shutout of the season while Ullmann made eight stops in the loss for STO.
