Saint John's hosts Hamline for a 4 p.m. tennis match this Tuesday, April 17, at the CSB Tennis Courts in St. Joseph.
A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Saint John's (5-8, 3-3 MIAC) won its third straight match with a 7-2 victory over Concordia-Moorhead April 13. Junior Fabricio Moncada (Managua, Nicaragua/Lincoln International Academy), ranked No. 8 in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Central Region rankings released April 12, improved to 13-4 (5-1 MIAC) on the season with a straight-set victory at No. 1 singles. Three of the Johnnies' other four wins in singles competition (Ian Hansen, Connor Rust, Willie Paul) followed suit in straight sets. Junior Zach Shriwise (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley West) won his first set 6-4 at No. 5 but needed a 10-6 victory in the super-breaker to claim the match for SJU. Hansen and Moncada won at No. 1 doubles, 8-6, while Paul and senior John Burns (Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo) tallied an 8-4 win at No. 3.
A LOOK AT THE PIPERS: Hamline (5-8, 0-5 MIAC) dropped a narrow 5-4 match to St. Olaf in its last competition two weeks ago (April 3). The Pipers jumped out to a 4-1 lead, but St. Olaf rallied to win the last four singles matches to claim the match. David Croonquist and Bernard Mitambo earned wins at Nos. 1 and 2 singles, respectively, via the super-breaker.
THE LAST MEETING: Saint John's brought its four-match losing skid to a halt with a 6-3 win at Hamline last April 13 (2011). SJU dropped two of its three doubles matches, but won five of the six singles matches, including three via super-breaker. Moncada improved to 6-3 at No. 1 singles with a straight-set (6-3, 6-2) win, while Hansen earned a 6-1, 5-7 and 10-3 win at No. 2. Elliott Elm '11 and Shriwise posted tough, back-to-back wins at Nos. 5 and 6 singles. Both needed 11 points to carry the super-breaker. Paul earned his first collegiate win with a straight-set (7-5, 6-1) victory at No. 6. Elm and Shriwise won the Johnnies' lone doubles match at No. 2, 8-6.
SERIES HISTORY: The Johnnies are 12-2 against HU under the direction of head coach Jack Bowe, including wins in each of the last five meetings (seven of last nine).
