SARTELL, Minn. – The sudden change in venue failed to slow Saint John's as the Johnnies won their third straight match with a 7-2 victory over Concordia-Moorhead on Friday, April 13.
The match was originally scheduled for 4 p.m. at the CSB Tennis Courts in St. Joseph, but the wind and rain moved it indoors to Gold's Gym in Sartell.
Junior Fabricio Moncada (Managua, Nicaragua/Lincoln International Academy), ranked No. 8 in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Central Region rankings released April 12, improved to 13-4 (5-1 MIAC) on the season with a straight-set victory at No. 1 singles. Three of the Johnnies' other four wins in singles competition (Ian Hansen, Connor Rust, Willie Paul) followed suit in straight sets. Junior Zach Shriwise (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley West) won his first set 6-4 at No. 5 but needed a 10-6 victory in the super-breaker to claim the match for SJU (5-8, 3-3 MIAC).
Hansen and Moncada won at No. 1 doubles, 8-6, while Paul and senior John Burns (Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo) tallied an 8-4 win at No. 3.
The victory avenged a 7-2 loss to the Cobbers in Fargo, N.D., last spring; the first regular-season loss to CC since 2005.
The Johnnies play host to Hamline for a 4 p.m. match this Tuesday, April 17, in St. Joseph.
