ST. PAUL, Minn. – Nationally-ranked St. Thomas coupled strong pitching with late-innings runs in a doubleheader sweep (3-1, 5-0) over Saint John's on Tuesday, April 10, in St. Paul.

The Tommies (20-4, 8-0 MIAC), ranked No. 5 according to the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) and No. 7 by D3baseball.com, scored all three runs in game one on two-out, infield singles off senior Hayden Zimmerman (New Richmond, Wis.).

UST took advantage of a leadoff double in the first inning to take an early 1-0 lead. The Johnnies (16-8, 4-2 MIAC) tied the game at 1-1 with a run in the fourth inning. Junior Max Forster (Minnetonka, Minn./Hopkins) recorded a one-out single, advanced to third on a single from classmate Connor Cline (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson), and scored on a sacrifice fly from senior Bert Marsnik (Annandale, Minn.). SJU had runners at second and third with one out in the top of the sixth, but junior Joey Long (Belvidere, Ill./Rockford Boylan) was thrown out at the plate attempting to score. A strikeout/wild pitch combination loaded the bases, but UST's Steve Maher tallied his 11th strikeout of the game to end the threat.

Charles Bruchu reached on a one-out single and stole second before scoring what proved to be the game-winning run on an infield single from Dylan Thomas. Zimmerman retired 14 consecutive batters prior to Bruchu's single. Thomas proceeded to steal second and advanced to third on a throwing error. He came in from third on an infield single to second base.

Zimmerman fell to 3-2 on the year, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits. He struck out three and walked one in six innings of work. Maher, meanwhile, allowed the lone run on four hits with 11 strikeouts and a pair of walks to improve to 8-0 this season.

St. Thomas broke a scoreless tie with three runs off Cline in the bottom of the fifth of game two, and added two more off freshman Collin Felhaber (North St. Paul, Minn.) in the sixth. Cline allowed three runs on six hits to take the loss (4-3). He struck out seven and walked two in five innings. Sophomore Justin Thompson (Chanhassen, Minn./Chaska) struck out his lone batter to escape the Tommies' bases-loaded threat in the sixth.

Thomas held the Johnnies in check for a complete-game, one-hit shutout. He struck out 11 with no walks.

SJU ended the day 0-for-12 with runners in scoring position and 0-for-15 with two outs.

The Johnnies return home to host Bethel this Saturday, April 14. Game one is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Saint John's Field in Collegeville.
