The Saint John's tennis team (1-5, 0-3 MIAC) returns to action with four matches in two days this Saturday and Sunday, March 3-4, in Southern California. SJU is scheduled to face Chapman (Calif.) and Caltech Saturday, followed by a neutral-site match against No. 6 Kenyon (Ohio) and a trip to No. 30 Occidental (Calif.) Sunday.

A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Saint John's senior Ian Hansen (Dawson, Minn./Dawson-Boyd) and junior Fabricio Moncada (Managua, Nicaragua/Lincoln International Academy) continued their winnings ways in singles competition but the Johnnies dropped a 6-3 decision to Carleton on Sunday, Feb. 19, in Sartell. Moncada won his third straight match to improve to 8-2 on the year with a victory at No.1 (6-3, 6-1). Hansen improved to 6-0 so far this spring with a win via the super-breaker at No. 2 (4-6, 6-2, 10-8). Hansen and junior Zach Shriwise (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley West) tallied the Johnnies' other win at No. 1 doubles, 8-1. Moncada was named the MIAC Men's Tennis Player of the Week on Tuesday, Feb. 21. He is currently ranked fourth in the region and No. 21 nationally according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).

A LOOK AT THE PANTHERS: Chapman (1-2) started the season with a 9-0 win against Caltech Feb. 4, but dropped two straight against fourth-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and Brandeis (Mass.). The Panthers finished with a 3-11 record last spring. Senior Alex Klein posted the best record, 6-6, for the Panthers last season and sophomore Justin Thompson is 1-2 at No. 1 singles so far in 2012.

A LOOK AT THE BEAVERS: Caltech (0-3) was blanked by Chapman to open the season and dropped a 9-0 decision to nationally-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Feb. 25. The pair of losses sandwhiched a 7-2 loss to NAIA Biola (Calif.) Feb. 10. Sophomores Devashish Joshi and Luka Mernik recorded an 8-6 win at No. 1 doubles, while freshman Ryan Batterman collected the lone singles' victory at No. 6.

A LOOK AT THE LORDS: Kenyon (4-2) advanced to the third round of the NCAA Tournament last spring and finished with a 19-4 record in 2011. The sixth-ranked Lords defeated Washington (Mo.)  5-4 and claimed third-place at the ITA National Indoor Championship held at Gustavus Adolphus last weekend. Juniors Paul Burgin and Austin Griffin won 8-5 at No. 2 doubles. Burgin is 11-4 in singles play, including a 4-2 mark at No. 1. Junior C.J. Williams (12-6 record), currently ranked No. 13 nationally, recorded a win at No. 3 singles. Freshman Wade Heerboth (10-4 record) collected a win at No. 4 singles, while freshman Tim Rosensteel (8-4 record) won at No. 5 singles. Freshman Michael Razumovsky, meanwhile, is 8-3 with a 5-1 record at No. 2 singles. Kenyon's losses were to Emory (Ga.) and North Carolina Wesleyan, schools that are currently ranked No. 2 and No. 5 nationally, respectively.

A LOOK AT THE TIGERS: Occidental brings a perfect 3-0 record to the court against Swarthmore (Pa.) and SJU March 4. Jordan Brown (No. 3), Spencer Choy (No. 5) and Stephen Perkins (No. 4) are all 3-0 in singles play. Oxy defeated SJU 6-1 in the last meeting between the two schools March 3, 2009.
