A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Saint John's (6-5-3, 3-2-1 MIAC) earned a point in the conference standings with a 2-2 tie at MIAC-leading St. Thomas Oct. 13 in St. Paul. The Johnnies held the lead for a combined 31:30 of the match, 1-0 and 2-1, but could not come away with the victory. Sophomore Ian Scudder (Sherwood, Ore.) gave SJU a 1-0 lead with an assist from junior Michael Coborn (St. Cloud, Minn./Cathedral), his eighth of the season. After a St. Thomas goal, sophomore Zane Heinselman (River Falls, Wis.) gave the lead back to SJU at the 77:29 mark. Freshman Kevin Lebahn (New Hope, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's) made one save for the Johnnies in net. Shots were even at 19, though SJU held a 6-3 advantage on goal. Fouls were whistled to a tune of 18-12 in favor of SJU.
A LOOK AT THE SCOTS: Macalester (3-10-1, 2-5-0 MIAC) arrives in Collegeville following a 4-0 defeat at the hands of St. Olaf, the Scots' second loss in a row. Mac started the season 0-6-1 and is 0-6 in road matches this fall. Junior Robin Forslund leads the Scots in points (8) and is tied with classmates Anthony Calderon and Will Mackaman for the team-lead in goals (2). Senior Jesse Yourish (3-7-1 record) has three shutouts on the season and leads Macalester with a 1.50 GAA and .691 save percentage.
LAST FALL'S MEETING: Macalester eked out a 1-0 home win against SJU last fall (Sept. 14). The two sides remained scoreless at half with the Scots having a 3-0 advantage in shots on goal. Macalester wasted little time taking the lead to start the second half, scoring 44 seconds in when Ryan Marshall's cross was tapped in by Taylor Rasmussen. Junior keeper Ryan Brutger (St. Cloud, Minn./Apollo) made four saves in the loss for the Johnnies.
SERIES HISTORY: Saint John's leads the series with a 17-15-2 record since 1981. The Johnnies are 9-8 at home against the Scots during that span, but only 2-5 in the last seven meetings in Collegeville. The series seems to go in streaks, as the Johnnies won the first nine meetings between the schools. After a few seasons of trading victories, Macalester started an impressive run of its own in 1995, going 8-1-2 until 2005. SJU avenged its regular-season loss (3-2 in double overtime) in 2005 with a 1-0 overtime victory for the MIAC Playoff Championship. The victory started a four-game winning streak for SJU until the Scots ended the run with a three-game winning streak of their own entering this year's matchup.
LAST FOUR MATCHES: The Johnnies' last four opponents on the regular-season schedule currently combine for a 17-37-3 overall record (as of Oct. 15). To top it off, three of the four matches will be played at home.
