MINNETONKA, Minn. – Macalester scored three runs in the top of the ninth to eliminate Saint John's 3-1 in the second round of the MIAC Tournament on Saturday, May 14.
The Johnnies end their 2011 season with a 19-14 record and a 13-7 mark in the MIAC.
Junior Hayden Zimmerman (New Richmond, Wis.) dominated Macalester (26-13, 14-4 MIAC), allowing only three hits over the first eight innings.
MAC's Nathan Rubin started the ninth with a walk. His pinch runner advanced to second on a wild pitch and then to third on a groundout to short before tying the game on another wild pitch. Mitch Glasser then followed with a single before Robert Williams hit a two-run homer.
SJU totaled eight hits, including three for extra bases, but left eight men on base. The Johnnies batted .125 (1-8) with men in scoring position.
Senior Brett Kramer (Baxter, Minn./Brainerd) started the seventh with a double, advanced to third on a flyout from sophomore Max Forster (Minnetonka, Minn./Hopkins), and scored on a triple by senior Matt Boys (Eden Prairie, Minn./Minnetonka), the 11th of his career.
Eric Robinson recorded a 1-2-3 ninth to earn the win. He entered in relief of Alex Ingram following Boys' RBI triple in the seventh.
Kramer and senior Matt Butorac (Maple Grove, Minn.) led SJU with two hits apiece, while sophomore Alex Powell (Hopkins, Minn.) added a triple.
Zimmerman suffered the frustrating loss, allowing three runs off five hits. He struck out four and walked three.
The conference's leader in team ERA (MIAC games only), SJU's pitching staff posted a 2.12 ERA and a .218 opponent batting average with 11 strikeouts and just three walks in 17 MIAC Tournament innings, but suffered two losses.
