SJU Set for Two Home Matches This Weekend

4/15/2011 2:25:40 PM

The SJU tennis team plays host to St. Thomas for a 4 p.m. match today at Gold's Gym in Sartell. The match was originally scheduled for Feb. 20 but rescheduled due to poor weather/travel conditions. The Johnnies then host Saint Mary's for a 3:30 p.m. match Sunday in Collegeville (weather permitting, otherwise Gold's Gym).

A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Saint John's (7-6, 1-5 MIAC) brought its MIAC skid to a halt with a 6-3 win at Hamline this past Wednesday in St. Paul. SJU dropped two of its three doubles matches, but won five of the six singles matches, including three via super-breaker. Sophomore Fabricio Moncada (Managua, Nicaragua/Lincoln International Academy) improved to 6-3 (3-3 MIAC) at No. 1 singles with a straight-set (6-3, 6-2) win, while junior Ian Hansen (Dawson, Minn./Dawson-Boyd)  earned a 6-1, 5-7 and 10-3 win at No. 2. Senior Elliott Elm (Eagan, Minn./Holy Angels) and sophomore Zach Shriwise (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley West) posted tough, back-to-back wins at Nos. 5 and 6 singles. Both needed 11 points to carry the super-breaker. Sophomore Willie Paul (Duluth, Minn./Marshall) earned his first collegiate win with a straight-set (7-5, 6-1) victory at No. 6. Elm and Shriwise won the Johnnies' lone doubles match at No. 2, 8-6.

A LOOK AT THE TOMMIES: St. Thomas (12-3, 4-2 MIAC) has the best overall record of any team in the MIAC but is tied for third in conference play. The Tommies have handled their past three conference opponents with ease: Macalester (9-0), Hamline (9-0) and Bethel (7-2). The two MIAC losses were to the teams above UST in the standings: Gustavus (9-0) and Carleton (8-1).

A LOOK AT THE CARDINALS: Saint Mary's (5-10, 0-8 MIAC) host Northwestern today before traveling to face SJU Sunday. Like the Johnnies, SMU shares a 5-4 loss to Macalester and has performed poorly in MIAC doubles competition (4-20, SJU is 4-16).
