COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Saint John's shot 58.6 percent from the field in the second half and held Concordia to a season-low 48 points in a 74-48 win Saturday, Feb. 12, in Collegeville.
The Cobbers (13-10, 9-9 MIAC) shot 23.3 percent (7-30), including two of 12 from the arc, in the first half as SJU built a 28-18 lead at intermission. The first-half statistics could have been even worse, as Andrew Martinson hit a long three at the buzzer. He landed on the foot of senior Nermin Hujdurovic (Tuzla, Bosnia/Medical) and did not return. Concordia ended the game 15-for-55 (27.3 percent) overall and two of 18 from three-point range (11.1 percent).
Hujdurovic and senior Aaron Burtzel (Cold Spring, Minn./Rocori) led SJU (12-10, 8-9 MIAC) with 13 points apiece. Hujdurovic added five rebounds and three blocks in 19 minutes of play, while Burtzel recorded his 24th career double-double with 14 rebounds and four assists. Senior Todd Herman (Spicer, Minn./New London-Spicer) added 12 points.
Darrin Olmscheid led the Cobbers with 12 points, while Ebo Nana-Kweson tallied 10. Martinson was 2-for-5 from beyond the arc before leaving due to the injury. The rest of the Cobbers were 0-for-13 from three-point range.
The game was still within 10 points with 10 minutes remaining before SJU went on a 13-2 run to break the contest wide open.
The 48 points allowed are the least by SJU since Feb. 15, 2006, at Augsburg (72-48).
With the win, SJU head coach Jim Smith passed longtime DePaul head coach Ray Meyer for 23rd in college basketball history with a 725-509 record in 47 seasons. Smith is now 68-29 all-time against Concordia, including a 43-5 record in Collegeville.
The Johnnies travel to face Gustavus Adolphus this Monday, Feb. 14. The game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in St. Peter.
