The Saint John's soccer team (8-6, 3-5 MIAC) travels to face Hamline (3-11-2, 1-6-2 MIAC) for a 3:30 p.m. match today in St. Paul.

A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Saint John's jumped out to an early 2-0 lead en route to a 3-0 win over Saint Mary's in the Johnnies' final home game of the 2011 season last Saturday. Freshman Ian Scudder (Sherwood, Ore.) put SJU on the scoreboard with his third goal of the season 10:12 into the match. Senior Sam Hautman (Apple Valley, Minn.) scored his second goal in as many games, the second of his collegiate career, 1:08 later. Junior Andrew Johnson (St. Louis Park, Minn.) laced a low corner kick directly to Hautman's head and to the back of the net. Sophomore Joe Balder (Stillwater, Minn.) increased the Johnnies' lead to 3-0 with his first goal of the season at the 77:09 mark of the match. Senior Mike Sikich (Apple Valley, Minn.) made seven saves to record his first collegiate shutout and improve to 4-0 on the season. The Johnnies out-shot the Cardinals 33-14, including a 16-7 advantage on goal (9-2 in the first half alone). SJU also knocked two shots of the post.

A LOOK AT THE PIPERS: Hamline enters today's match riding a five-game losing streak since its 2-1 win over Saint Mary's Oct. 8. The streak, however, includes three one-goal losses, two of which were to nationally-ranked Gustavus Adolphus and St. Thomas. Sophomore Greg Northrop leads the team with seven points (3g/1a), while junior Sam Slagle has six (2g/2a). Senior Zach Nelson and junior Spencer VonBehren have combined for a 2.11 GAA and a .748 save percentage in 16 matches this fall.

SERIES HISTORY: SJU holds a 27-3-2 record against the Pipers since 1981, including a 13-2-1 record in St. Paul. The Pipers' two home victories occurred in the Johnnies' last three visits, however (2005: 2-0, 2009: 1-0). SJU has outscored Hamline 111-13 during the 32-match span. Of the 27 victories, 22 were shutouts.

LAST YEAR: Sophomore Joe Laue's (St. Louis Park, Minn./Holy Angels) second career goal in as many games gave SJU a 1-0 win over Hamline last fall in Collegeville. A free kick from sophomore Michael Coborn (St. Cloud, Minn./Cathedral) sent the ball to the far post, where Laue knocked it to the far corner on a header 11:39 into the match. Matt Anderson '11 made seven saves in net to earn his third shutout of the season and improve to 2-2-2.

RECENT OFFENSIVE FORCE ON THE BACKLINE: Senior Sam Hautman tallied two goals, the first of his collegiate career, in last week's pair of games against St. Thomas and Saint Mary's. He registered six of his 10 career shots, including four of his five career shots-on-goal, last week.
