ST. PAUL, Minn. – Saint John's trimmed an 18-point deficit down to two but could not take the lead as No. 4 St. Thomas edged the Johnnies 62-59 on Saturday, Jan. 22, in St. Paul.
The Tommies (15-1, 10-1 MIAC) led by as much as 18 points with 13 minutes left, and by 15 points with 6:16 remaining, but SJU (7-8, 3-7 MIAC) went on a 21-8 run to pull it within two, 61-59.
UST's Alex Healy made one of two free throws with 16 seconds left to increase the lead to 62-59, but senior Sam Blank's (Rollingstone, Minn./Winona Cotter) deep three-pointer was off the mark.
Senior Todd Herman (Spicer, Minn./New London-Spicer) led all scorers with 25 points on 11 of 15 shooting. He scored a game- and career-high 28 points on 12 of 16 shooting in the 67-62 loss to the Tommies last February. Junior Aaron Barmore (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson) added 12 points and senior Aaron Burtzel (Cold Spring, Minn./Rocori) totaled 10 points and seven rebounds.
Tommy Hannon led the Tommies with 16 points and 10 rebounds.
SJU shot 53.6 percent (15-28) to UST's 37.0 percent (10-27) in the second half to outscore the home team 38-31. The Johnnies, however, made just two of their 11 three-point attempts (18.2 percent). Both teams left eight points (9-17) at the foul line and were 24-for-53 (45.3 percent) from the field. SJU outscored the Tommies 15-2 off turnovers and missed six layups in the contest.
The Tommies have now won seven games by a margin of five points or less this season, as well as each of the last three meetings with SJU. The Johnnies are now 22 of 48 (45.8 percent) from the free-throw line over the last three meetings.
The Johnnies return home to host Hamline this Wednesday, Jan. 26. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Sexton Arena in Collegeville.
