A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Freshman
Elliott Olsen (Cedar, Minn./St. Francis) tallied his first collegiate goal and senior
Matt Anderson (Eden Prairie, Minn.) made seven saves as the host Johnnies defeated Augsburg 1-0 in its MIAC opener on Sept. 15. Senior #J.C. Artavia# (White Bear Lake, Minn.) won the corner kick from freshman
Michael Coborn (St. Cloud, Minn./Cathedral) and released a shot, but it was blocked by an Auggie player. The ricochet went directly to Olsen, who then dribbled into the box and unleashed a shot to the far right corner 31:15 into the match. The shutout is the second for Anderson and improves his record to 1-1-1 on the season.
A LOOK AT THE OLES: St. Olaf opened its MIAC season with a 2-1 win against Hamline on Sept. 15. Ryan Johnsrud and Isaac Tut scored for the Oles. Senior midfielder John Zietlow, a three-time All-MIAC selection, returns for the Oles, as does senior midfielder Tommy Van Wylen, junior forward Isaac Tut and senior goalkeeper Alex Kuehl. Zietlow leads the way with 29 career goals and 29 career assists, while Kuehl posted an 11-5-2 record and tallied a 0.95 GAA and a .769 save percentage last year. Freshman forward David Rosenthal, last year's Star Tribune and Pioneer Press Metro Player of the Year, will also add some depth for the Oles.
THE LAST MEETING: Saint John's fell to St. Olaf 2-1 last fall. Blake Dressen gave the Oles an early 1-0 lead just 4:06 into the match. Nathan Swenson increased the lead to 2-0 with a goal 10 minutes into the second half, before senior defender
Andrew Lilly (Maple Grove, Minn.) finally put the Johnnies on the scoreboard at the 67:58 mark of the second half. The goal was the first of his collegiate career.
A LOOK AT THE DUTCH: The Dutch return nine starters, three of whom were all-conference players a year ago. Second-team all-conference pick Brett McKenzie returns after leading the team with 10 goals and three assists last season. Also returning are all-conference senior Cody Jandik and junior Kevin McQuerrey. Last season, Glassman appeared in 13 games before an injury kept him out for the rest of the season. During those 13 games, he made 52 saves and allowed 1.12 goals per game.
THE LAST MEETING: SJU fell to Central (Iowa) with a 5-0 decision in Pella last season. Six Johnnie starters stayed back in Collegeville due to academic obligations (exams and labs). Central jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with two goals in the first nine minutes of the match. The Dutch then added two more goals, 1:58 apart, to take a 4-0 lead into the half. The home team added the fifth and final goal at the 53:14 mark of the second half.
Matt Anderson made one save in the second half. Twenty-two Johnnies saw action in the match.
