Johnnie Tennis Hosts No. 28 Gustavus Tonight, Travels to Macalester Saturday

The SJU tennis team (6-6, 1-3 MIAC) is set for two MIAC matches this weekend, beginning with a home match versus No. 28 Gustavus Adolphus tonight. The match is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at Gold's Gym in Sartell. The Johnnies then travel to face Macalester for a 12 p.m. match on Saturday, April 10, at the Hayden Tennis Courts in St. Paul.

A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Saint John's dropped its second straight, a 6-3 decision to Bethel on April 7, in Arden Hills. Sophomore Ian Hansen (Dawson, Minn./Dawson-Boyd) earned the Johnnies' lone singles win with a 6-1, 6-1 decision at No. 3. Hansen then teamed up with freshman Fabricio Moncada (Managua, Nicaragua/Lincoln International Academy) to earn an 8-5 victory at No. 2 doubles. Moncada suffered his first MIAC loss, 6-3 and 6-4, at No. 1 singles. Junior Elliott Elm (Eagan, Minn./Holy Angels) and freshman Zach Shriwise (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley West) earned SJU's other win, a 9-8 (7-5) win at No. 3 doubles. Senior Dutch Hansen (Dawson, Minn./Dawson-Boyd) suffered a tough-luck loss at No. 2 singles via a close 10-8 decision in the super-breaker.

A LOOK AT THE GUSTIES: The Gusties are currently 8-7 overall after losing their last three matches in California.  The Gusties are currently third in the MIAC with a 3-0 record and are ranked No. 28 in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) national poll released March 30. Sophomore Amrik Donkena leads GAC with a 10-5 record at No. 1 singles despite having lost each of his last three matches. Sophomore Patrick Clark and freshman Tyler Johnson are both 9-6 at Nos. 2 and 4 singles, respectively.

THE LAST MEETING: Saint John's fell to then-No. 8 Gustavus Adolphus 9-0 on March 14, 2009, in St. Peter. All six singles matches were determined in straight sets.

A LOOK AT THE SCOTS: The Scots (10-3, 2-1 MIAC) defeated Bethel 5-4 in its last match on March 27 to extend their winning streak to six. Junior Justin Margolies (8-3 overall) is currently riding a five-match winning streak, while fellow junior Michael Coleman and freshman Max Edwards have each won their last four matches. Coleman has tallied a 9-3 record on this season (6-1 at No.1  singles), while Edwards has posted a 10-4 mark with the bulk of his decisions registering at No. 4 singles (5-2). Edwards and Margolies have posted a 9-2 record and have won their last seven matches at No. 3 doubles.

THE LAST MEETING: Saint John's opened its MIAC schedule with a 7-2 win over Macalester on Feb. 15, 2009, in Sartell. The Johnnies swept all three doubles matches and claimed wins at Nos. 1, 2, 4 and 5 singles. Dutch Hansen claimed a 7-6 (7-5), 6-1 win at No. 2 singles.  Senior Luke Odegaard (Forest Lake, Minn.) dropped his first set 6-4 at No. 4 singles and then stormed back with a 6-3 win in the second set and an 11-9 win in the super-breaker.
