SJU Travels to St. Olaf Friday, Hosts Hamline Saturday

The Johnnie tennis team (6-8, 1-5 MIAC) looks to end its current four-match losing streak this Friday, April 16, at St. Olaf. The match is set for 4 p.m. at the Carlson Tennis Courts in Northfield. SJU then plays host to Hamline this Saturday, April 17, in Collegeville. The match, which is the first of three home matches for SJU, is set for 12 p.m. at the Saint John's Tennis Courts.

A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Saint John's lost a gut-wrenching 5-4 decision to Macalester on Saturday, April 10, in St. Paul. Sophomore Ian Hansen (Dawson, Minn./Dawson-Boyd) earned a straight-set victory, 6-3, and 6-2, at No. 3 singles, while senior Luke Odegaard (Forest Lake, Minn.) tallied a win via the super-breaker at No. 5 (6-3, 3-6, 10-4). Hansen and freshman Fabricio Moncada (Managua, Nicaragua/Lincoln International Academy) then teamed up to post an, 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles. Moncada lost a tough 6-4, 6-7 (4-7), and 10-6 decision at No. 1 singles. Junior Elliott Elm (Eagan, Minn./Holy Angels) and freshman Zach Shriwise (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley West) earned their fifth straight victory at No. 3 doubles, 8-6. Elm lost a super-breaker decision of his own, 3-6, 6-0, and 10-6 at No. 4 singles.

A LOOK AT THE OLES: The St. Olaf tennis team started off the season 0-6, but has won three of its last five matches. The Oles won four of the six doubles matches to pull out a 5-4 MIAC win over Concordia-Moorhead on April 10. St. Olaf tallied wins from Knute Gunderson, John Wight, Charlie Reinertsen and Nick Hubbard-Peters at Nos. 2-5 singles. Gunderson and Will Mitchell won at No. 2 doubles. Reinertsen is the lone Ole with a singles record above .500 on the year (7-4).

THE LAST MEETING: Saint John's fell to St. Olaf 7-2 in last year's first home outdoor match of the season. Ian Hansen was the Johnnies' lone singles win at No. 3 with a 7-6 (7-3), 3-6, and 10-6 victory in the super-breaker. Senior Dutch Hansen (Dawson, Minn./Dawson-Boyd) teamed up to earn a lengthy 9-8 victory at No. 2 doubles, which included a 15-13 win in the tie-breaker.

A LOOK AT THE PIPERS: Hamline is currently 7-6 overall, but 0-5 in the MIAC.  The Pipers lost their last match against St. Olaf, 5-4. The Pipers took a 2-1 lead after doubles competition, as David Croonquist and Robert Becker partnered for an 8-4 win at No. 1. Patrick Mitambo and Kyle Helgemoe then won at No. 2, 8-2. Croonquist (7-4 overall) and Helgemoe (8-4 overall) went on to sweep their matches on the day, starting with an easy win for Croonquist at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-1. Helgemoe won in a third-set super-breaker at No. 4 singles, 7-6 (8-6), 2-6, and 11-9.

THE LAST MEETING: The Saint John's tennis team cruised to an 8-1 win over Hamline last season. Dutch Hansen, Ian Hansen and Odegaard all posted straight-set victories in singles competition. The Johnnies have won five of the last six meetings with the Pipers.
