The Johnnies (2-4-3, 1-2-2 MIAC) play host to Hamline (5-6-0, 1-3-0 MIAC) for a 1 p.m. match this Saturday, Oct. 9, at George Durenberger Field in Collegeville. SJU then travels to face Wisconsin-Superior (7-3-1, 1-0-0 WIAC) for a 2 p.m. match Sunday, Oct. 10, in Duluth.
A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Carleton scored three consecutive goals enroute to a 3-1 win over host Saint John's on Oct. 2. Freshman defender Joe Laue (St. Louis Park, Minn./Holy Angels) denied the shutout via his first career goal with less than four minutes remaining. Fellow freshman, Ryan McMillan (Minneapolis, Minn./Holy Angels), took control of a deflected corner kick and fed it to Laue, who unleashed a shot to the back of the net. Sophomore Andrew Johnson (St. Louis Park, Minn.) was also credited with an assist. Senior Matt Anderson (Eden Prairie, Minn.) made one save but left following Carleton's first goal due to injury. Junior Mike Sikich (Apple Valley, Minn.) made four saves in relief.
A LOOK AT HAMLINE: Hamline dropped a 2-1 decision to Wis.-Superior in its most recent match Oct. 6. Following a scoreless first half, the Yellowjackets struck first, scoring at 52:38 as Eric Nilsen scored on a pass from Thomas Shuldheisz in front of net. UWS then added a second goal, unassisted, at 73:54 from Nate Engel. The Pipers went on the attack late in the game, and at 82:45, freshman Stephen Johnson scored on a header, with the assist going to sophomore Sam Slagle. The Yellowjackets out-shot the Pipers, 13-7, and had four corner kicks to the Pipers' one. Senior Javier Rios leads the team with 12 points (5g/2a), followed by junior Ibou Wone with nine (4g/1a). Senior Moe Tegeldin leads the Pipers with 32 shots and is third on the team with eight points (3g/2a). Junior Zach Nelson is 4-2-0 with a 1.68 GAA and a .740 save percentage.
THE LAST MEETING: Saint John's fell 1-0 at Hamline on Oct. 7 of last season. Matt Warhol scored the match's lone goal, his third of the season, at the 64:09 mark of the second half for Hamline. Luke Nelson made five saves in the loss for SJU. The win was just the third for the Pipers in the past 29 meetings with SJU.
A LOOK AT WISCONSIN-SUPERIOR: As mentioned above, Wis.-Superior improved to 7-3-1 on the season with a 2-1 win at Hamline this past Wednesday. Junior Thomas Shuldheisz and freshman Ben Royce lead the Yellowjackets with 11 (5g/1a) and 10 (4g/2a) points, respectively. The two have combined for six of the seven game-winning goals so far this season. Senior Tom Fitzer is 5-3-1 with a .864 save percentage and a 0.79 GAA in net this fall.
THE LAST MEETING: Saint John's scored the final two goals via its Stillwater connection to defeat Wis.-Superior 2-1 in the last, and only other meeting between the two teams, Sept. 6, 2008, in Moorhead. The Yellowjackets recorded 27 fouls to the Johnnies' 11 in the match. Shuldheisz gave Wis.-Superior a 1-0 lead 26:39 into the match. The lead didn't last long however, as Levi Lowell tied the game in the 37th minute on a cross from Brian Horst. Kellen Groves then scored the game-winner at the 62:11 mark on a penalty kick. Luke Nelson made one save to improve his record to 3-0 on the young season.
