NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Saint John's University sophomore quarterback Joe Boyle (Richfield, Minn./Holy Angels) scored from one yard out on the Johnnies' third play of overtime to defeat St. Olaf 20-14 on Saturday, Oct. 25 in Northfield.

Junior defensive back Bobby Klint (Minneapolis, Minn./Totino-Grace) blocked a 22-yard field goal attempt by St. Olaf's Jordan Rosedahl with one second remaining in regulation to force overtime.

The overtime game is SJU's first against a MIAC opponent and first since Sept. 7, 2001 (28-21 loss at Wis.-Eau Claire). All three overtime games in school history have been occurred on the road. The Johnnies defeated Pacific Lutheran, Wash. 28-21 in the second round of the NCAA Division III playoffs in the first overtime in school history on Nov. 25, 2000.

Following a scoreless first quarter, St. Olaf got on the scoreboard first on a two-yard touchdown run by Evan Endsley with 6:34 left in the second quarter.

Boyle then engineered a 13-play, 99-yard scoring drive that ended with a 26-yard touchdown pass to junior wide receiver Ben Vanderheyden (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata) on the final play of the first half.

An interception by Klint on the Oles' third play of the second half gave the Johnnies prime field position on St. Olaf's 15-yard line. Seven plays later, sophomore running back Jakob Reding (Eden Prairie, Minn.) gave the Johnnies a 14-7 lead with a four-yard touchdown.

Endsley scored his second rushing touchdown of the game, this time from four yards out, to tie the game at 14-14 with 5:14 left in regulation.

The Oles' Tyler Jones intercepted Boyle's third-and-nine pass attempt on the very next possession to give St. Olaf the ball on SJU's 35-yard line with 4:15 left. The Oles reached the Johnnies' five-yard line with one second left, but Rosedahl's 22-yard field goal attempt was blocked by Klint, which sent the game to overtime.

On St. Olaf's first play of overtime, John Haberman hit Ryan St. John on a pass to the Johnnies' nine-yard line, but Klint jarred the ball loose where junior linebacker Ryan Wimmer (St. Cloud, Minn.) fell on it for SJU.

Three plays, Boyle scored on a one-yard run to win the game for SJU (6-2, 4-2 MIAC).

Boyle ended the day 12 of 23 passing for 115 yards. Vanderheyden accounted for 71 of the Johnnies' 115 yards thru the air on five receptions. Reding led the SJU ground game with 53 yards on 13 carries.

Senior linebacker Nick Kotsmith (Foley, Minn.) led the SJU defense with 11 tackles (three solo), while Wimmer added 10 stops (three solo). Junior linebacker Ethan Eid (Arden Hills, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) collected nine tackles (five solo), including one for a loss, and one interception.

Endsley gained 57 yards on 17 carries for the Oles (3-4, 1-4 MIAC), while Haberman was 13 of 19 passing for 129 yards and two interceptions. Adam Concannon led the Ole defense with nine tackles (two solo) and one interception.

St. Olaf outgained the Johnnies 252-201, but lost the turnover battle 3-2.

With the win, SJU head coach John Gagliardi improves his career record to 459-124-11 (.782) and 435-118-10 (.782) at SJU.

The Johnnies return to action in two weeks, Nov. 8, as they play host to Augsburg. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Clemens Stadium in Collegeville.
