Saint John’s senior Fabricio Moncada (Managua, Nicaragua/Lincoln International Academy) went 3-0 at No. 1 singles as the Saint John’s tennis team locked up a bid to the MIAC Tournament with two wins in three matches over the weekend.

The Johnnies’ (5-11, 5-3 MIAC) 5-4 win over Macalester April 21 guarantees SJU at worst the fifth seed in the six-team conference tournament May 3-4 in St. Peter.

Moncada is currently 17-5 overall (12-4 at No. 1) in singles competition, which matches his record from last spring. With at least four more matches remaining this season, including a 4 p.m. contest against St. Scholastica today (April 23), Moncada is one victory away from the highest total since Peter Crouser and Brent Feddema each won 20 matches in 1993.

He is ranked 10th in the latest ITA Central Region rankings released April 11 and is 14-3 against NCAA Division III opponents this season, including seven wins in his last eight matches. Moncada and classmate Willie Paul (Duluth, Minn./Marshall) are tied for the MIAC-lead with seven wins in conference play (7-1 record).
