COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Saint John's sophomore wide receiver
Griffin Murray (Jordan, Minn./Holy Family Catholic) was named The House Food & Tap's SJU Athlete of the Week on Monday, Sept. 28.
Murray took the opening kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown in the Johnnies' 72-0 win on Saturday (Sept. 26) at Augsburg. The kick return for a touchdown was the Johnnies' first since Evan Clark's 82-yarder on Nov. 19, 2016, in the Johnnies' 32-31 win over Wisconsin-Platteville in the first round of the NCAA Division III playoffs.
The 93-yard sprint, which is tied for the fifth-longest kick return in program history, was also the first for a touchdown on the opening kickoff since assistant coach
Josh Bungum started SJU's eventual 56-0 win at Carleton on Oct. 24, 2015, with a 96-yard score.
Murray is averaging 28.8 yards on 11 touches so far this fall: 149 yards on four kick returns, 131 yards on five receptions and 37 yards on two punt returns.
No. 5 SJU (3-0, 2-0 MIAC) hosts No. 7/8 Bethel (2-1, 2-0 MIAC) as part of Family Weekend at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3, in Clemens Stadium.
