SJU Golf Finishes Sixth at Wartburg Spring Invitational

WAVERLY, Iowa – Both Saint John's golf teams finished sixth out of 17 teams at the Wartburg Spring Invitational on Sunday, March 29, at Prairie Links G.C. (par 72).

Kirkwood C.C. (Iowa), the No. 4-ranked team in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), finished first with a three-over par 579. Kirkwood and Division II Upper Iowa shot Sunday's best round at 283 (+4). Grinnell (Iowa) carded a 594 (+18) for third, followed by Kirkwood's second team (596, +20), Wartburg's second team (600, +24) and the Johnnies (601, +25).

Sophomore Connor O'Hara (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South) led the 10 Johnnies and SJU Blue with a two-day 147 (+3) to tie for ninth in the field of 96 golfers. O'Hara shot par or better on his first 12 holes, with back-to-back birdies on 6-7 and 11-12. His Sunday afternoon 71 (-1) was a collegiate career low and the top-10 finish was his second. 

Upper Iowa graduate student Owen Davison won the tournament with a two-day 138 (-6). He shot a round-one 71 (-1) and a five-under par 67 Sunday afternoon.

Senior Ethan Kress (Woodbury, Minn.) finished one stroke behind O'Hara in 11th to lead the first team with a round-two 76 (+4) after shooting even on Saturday. He added 11 pars to his day one total of 17 to lead the tournament. 

Junior Nate Appelhof (Blaine, Minn./Totino-Grace) collected a trio of birdies and 12 pars for a two-over par 72 on Sunday. He finished 17th (150, +6) and was fifth in the tournament with 24 pars. 

Sophomore Gavin Grahek (Maple Grove, Minn.) followed him in 20th with a two-day score of 151 (+7). Grahek birdied five holes in round two but matched that total with five bogeys and tripled his last hole of the tournament for a 75 (+3). 

Senior Tim Fultz (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater Area) rounded out SJU Red in 27th, one shot behind Grahek, and bettered his round by six strokes on Sunday. 

Sophomore Mac Drake (Sioux Falls, S.D./O'Gorman) was second on SJU Blue and 14th overall with a day-two 76. He birdied three times on par 4s but shot five-over on his back nine. He led the tournament on par 4s, shooting an average of 3.85. 

Freshman Braxton Berlin (Lake City, Minn.) carded a 74 (+2) on Sunday to tie with Grahek at 20th overall (151, +7). Freshman Lukas Ehmke (Woodbury, Minn./East Ridge) finished 33rd (154, +5), followed by classmate Austin Roloff (Minneapolis, Minn./Spring Lake Park) and sophomore Marty Timmons  (Brainerd, Minn.) in 47th (157, +8).

The Johnnies return to the course for Gustavus Adolphus' 54-hole, Bobby Krig Invitational on Saturday and Sunday, April 18-19.
