A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Saint John's (1-0-1 overall) started the 2026-27 season with a 4-2 win and 2-2 tie to Marian (Wis.) last weekend at the Municipal Athletic Complex (MAC) in St. Cloud.

Saint John's 4, Marian 2 (Oct. 30)
Senior forward Jackson Borst (Edina, Minn.) scored SJU's first goal of the season, capitalizing on a misplayed puck by the Sabre defense. Borst had an empty net to shoot the puck into after the Marian goaltender stepped out of the crease. Borst's celebration drew an SJU penalty that resulted in a power-play goal for the Sabres' Brendan Bottem 56 seconds later.

Borst started his next shift with revenge in mind, setting up SJU's forecheck off the opening faceoff. His pressure resulted in possession for the Johnnies, who worked the puck at the blue line between freshman defenseman Logan Opgrand (Eagan, Minn.) and sophomore defenseman Cashen Naeve (Independence, Minn.). Naeve made a defender miss and rifled a shot that tipped off Marian goaltender Andreai Proctor-Ramirez for junior forward Jordan Newpower (Lino Lakes, Minn.) to tap into the net.

SJU's 2-1 lead held through the second period and for the majority of the third until sophomore forward Seth Terhell (Cambridge, Minn.) gave the Johnnies a two-goal cushion. After senior forward Luke Levandowski (Rosemount, Minn.) won possession of the puck below the goal line, senior forward Jacob McPartland (Victoria, Minn.) hit Terhell in the slot with a pass that beat Proctor-Ramirez over his left pad.

The two-goal lead lasted for four minutes until Marian's Bronson Babyak intercepted an errant pass at the blue line for a breakaway goal over the shoulder of sophomore goaltender Kyle Abrahamson (Cloquet, Minn.).

Naeve, however, put the comeback to rest with an empty-net goal with 1:26 remaining.

Abrahamson made 23 saves in the second start of his collegiate career. Naeve and senior forward Jack Wandmacher (St. Louis Park, Minn.) led SJU's offensive attack with four shots apiece. The Johnnies also blocked seven shots, including three off of senior captain Parker Gnos (Excelsior, Minn.), who returned for his first game in 281 days after suffering a season-ending injury Jan. 22 at Saint Mary's.

t-Saint John's 2, Marian 2 (Oct. 31)
Marian wasted no time getting on the board after the previous night's loss, as the Sabres' Caden Carlson scored just 2:26 into the game.

The MU lead held through the end of the first, but the Johnnies' intermission break inspired an early second-period goal from sophomore forward Jordan Larkee (St. Paul, Minn.). Naeve moved the puck up ice to sophomore forward Carter Krenke (Bloomington, Minn.) on the wing. Krenke forced an odd-man rush and his cross-ice pass drew the 6-foot-7 Marian goalie across his crease, but not fast enough to beat the one-timed shot of Larkee into the back of the net.

Marian retook the lead to start the third, scoring the third quick goal of the game 1:28 into the final frame.

The Johnnies answered, though, as the line of Newpower with Borst and senior forward Logan Lyke (Medina, Minn.) scored on a tic-tac-toe zone entry to tie the score at two apiece. The goal was Newpower's second of the weekend and 10th of his career.

SJU rifled seven more shots on goal for the rest of the period but couldn't find the back of the net. Each team had two shots on goal in overtime but neither goalie conceded.

Freshman goaltender Casimir Weckström (Kokkola, Finland) made 26 saves in his first collegiate start, including 12 in the second period. Borst and Larkee led SJU with five shots on goal each.

NEW RANKINGS: SJU was ranked No. 15 in both the DIIIHockeyNews.com and USCHO.com Top 15 polls released Monday (Nov. 2). Seven total teams in the NCAA West Region were ranked in the top 15. St. Norbert (Wis.) was ranked as high as No. 4 in the USCHO poll, while Adrian (Mich.) was seventh in the DIIIHockeyNews rankings. Aurora (Ill.) and Wisconsin-Stout were both ahead of SJU in No. 11/12 and No. 10/12, respectively. The USCHO had Trine (Ind.) at No. 14, while DIIIHockeyNews listed MIAC-foe Gustavus Adolphus at No. 14.

A LOOK AT THE YELLOWJACKETS: Wisconsin-Superior (1-1-0 overall) split its season-opening series against Bethel last weekend. BU built a 4-1 lead en route to a 4-3 win on Friday in Superior, Wis., but the Yellowjackets erased a 1-0 deficit with two unanswered goals for Saturday's 2-1 road win. UWS was picked to finish fifth in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) preseason coaches' poll and return two All-WIAC honorees. Senior forward Daniel Rozsival was a first-team selection after leading the team in points (21) and assists (13), and was tied for the team lead in goals (8). He tallied three assists last weekend against the Royals. Sophomore forward Roope Tuomioksa posted 11 points (6g/5a) and earned All-MIAC third-team honors. Freshman forward Vinay Junek tallied two goals and an assist with a +3 through the season's first two games.

LAST SEASON: The Johnnies suffered a 2-1 loss to Superior back on Jan. 10 at the HBNHC in St. Cloud. The two teams were tied for all but a minute and a half of the contest, as Superior scored the game-winning goal with just 43.5 seconds remaining in regulation. SJU pulled goaltender Jon Howe '26 for the extra skater and managed three quick shots on goal in a last-ditch scoring chance from senior forward Chris Kernan (Maple Grove, Minn.) but could not get the puck past the Yellowjacket goaltender.

Following a scoreless first period, Carson Riddle gave UWS a 1-0 lead with a shorthanded goal 7:49 into the second period. McPartland tied the game with his third goal of the season and 10th of his career 27 seconds later, two seconds after the power play expired. Defenseman Zach Enebak '26 dug the puck out from a scrum behind the net and dished the puck to Borst on the breakout. Borst skated end-to-end and into Superior's slot before setting McPartland up with a quick pass directly in front of the net that he buried in the top left corner.

It appeared that the Johnnies were heading toward their fourth overtime of the season, but Daniel Rozsival just barely beat Howe, who nicked the initial shot with his glove while sliding across the crease, on the backdoor to put the game away for the visitors.

Howe finished with 27 saves between the pipes, including 12 in the final period. Saint John's went 0-for-2 on the power play but held Superior without a shot on goal in three opportunities with the man advantage.

SERIES HISTORY: SJU is 9-26-1 against Superior since the 1972-73 season, including a 3-8-1 record on its home ice. UWS snapped a four-game skid in the series by winning each of the last four meetings.

A LOOK AT THE BLUGOLDS: Wisconsin-Eau Claire (1-0-1 overall), like SJU, started its season with a 1-0-1 record at home against the Milwaukee School of Engineering (Wis.). The Blugolds surrendered three third-period goals for a 3-1 deficit but scored twice in the final 1:27 of regulation to force overtime in a 3-3 tie on Friday. The momentum carried over for Saturday night's 4-0 victory. UWEC was picked to finish second in the WIAC preseason poll. Senior forward Dayne Hoyord, who was All-WIAC honorable mention in 2024-25, leads the Blugolds in points through two games with three (1g/2a). Junior forward Nolan Grier was an All-WIAC honorable mention last season after totaling 16 points (11g/5a). Eau Claire visits Augsburg Friday night (Nov. 6) before hosting SJU Saturday.

A YEAR AGO: The Johnnies never trailed and Newpower scored two goals – including the go-ahead tally on the power play with 1:28 remaining – in a game that featured 10 goals and a tied score at least once in each period. The win was SJU's first at Eau Claire since an 8-1 victory on Nov. 15, 2002.

The Johnnies took the first lead of the game with 2:44 left in the first period on a goal from McPartland and sophomore forward Tyler Smith (Carver, Minn.). Smith cleared the puck out from in front of the net and away from two competing Blugolds before sending it out of the zone at the blue line. His chip, which later became his first collegiate point, bounced off the wall for McPartland on the rush, who made a move to his backhand and beat the UWEC goaltender to the top-right corner.

SJU carried the 1-0 advantage into the second period, but Grier got the home team on the scoreboard 32 seconds after the break to tie the game at one apiece.

A trio of seniors connected for the go-ahead goal at the 8:06 mark of the second period. After a poke check to clear the zone from forward Rob Christy '26, defenseman Michael Spinner '26 rushed into the zone on a 3-on-2 and dished a cross-ice pass to Enebak for his first goal of the season and second of his career.

Just two minutes later, Larkee added a cushion with his second goal of the season. After the Johnnies and linemate Cam Boche (Lakeville, Minn.) moved the puck into the neutral zone, a miscommunication and bounce off a Blugold defender gave the puck to Larkee all alone, who buried it in the back of the net.

That cushion proved useful, as UWEC's Easton Inglis cut the lead back to one on the power play for a 3-2 game at the second intermission.

The Johnnies returned the favor with another goal off the opening faceoff, as a 3-on-1 led to Newpower's fifth goal of the season 21 seconds into the third period. Captain Mason Campbell '26 sent the puck across the zone to Newpower, who jumped into the odd-man rush thanks to a Blugold collision. He exchanged passes with Borst before beating Max Gutjahr across the crease.

Grier scored his second goal of the game and ninth of the season to keep UWEC in the game 2:41 later. The Blugolds then tied the game on a rebound and wrap-around with 10:17 to play in regulation.

SJU was awarded a third-period power play with just over two minutes left in the game and Newpower capitalized for his second goal of the night – and the game-winner – with 1:28 left in the game. Defenseman Sam Berry moved the puck across the UWEC zone to Newpower whose shot escaped Gutjahr's blocker at the post.

Senior forward Jackson Bisson (Edina, Minn.) cleared the zone and scored the empty-net insurance goal for the 6-4 final.

Howe made 33 saves in the win for his seventh victory this season (7-2-3 record) and 20th of his career.

SERIES HISTORY: The Johnnies are 8-18-4 against the Blugolds since the 1985-86 season, including a 3-11-2 record in Eau Claire, Wis.
