Box Score
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – No. 15 Saint John's completed its season-opening series with a 2-2 tie against Marian (Wis.) on Saturday afternoon, Oct. 31, at the Municipal Athletic Complex (MAC) in St. Cloud.
Marian (0-1-1 overall) wasted no time getting on the board after its 4-2 loss the night before, as the Sabres' Caden Carlson scored just 2:26 into the game.
The MU lead held through the end of the first, but the Johnnies' intermission break inspired an early second-period goal from sophomore forward
Jordan Larkee (St. Paul, Minn.). Sophomore defenseman
Cashen Naeve (Independence, Minn.) moved the puck up ice to sophomore forward
Carter Krenke (Bloomington, Minn.) on the wing. Krenke forced an odd-man rush and his cross-ice pass drew the 6-foot-7 Marian goalie across his crease, but not fast enough to beat the one-timed shot of Larkee into the back of the net.
Marian retook the lead to start the third, scoring the third quick goal of the game 1:28 into the final frame.
The Johnnies (1-0-1 overall) answered, though, as the line of junior forward
Jordan Newpower (Lino Lakes, Minn.) with senior forwards
Logan Lyke (Medina, Minn.) and
Jackson Borst (Edina, Minn.) scored on a tic-tac-toe zone entry to tie the score at two apiece. The goal was Newpower's second o the weekend and 10th of his career.
SJU rifled seven more shots on goal for the rest of the period but couldn't find the back of the net. Each team had two shots on goal in overtime but neither goalie conceded.
Freshman goaltender Casimir Weckström (Kokkola, Finland) made 26 saves in his first collegiate start, including 12 in the second period. Borst and Larkee led SJU with five shots on goal each.
The Johnnies play host to Wisconsin-Superior for Senior Night at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 6, at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud.
