A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Saint John's (15-2-2, 7-2-1 MIAC) ended the regular-season schedule with a 5-1 win at St. Scholastica on Saturday (Oct. 31) in Duluth.

Freshman forward Grady Monette (Andover, Minn.) netted his first career hat trick in the victory, which sealed the Johnnies' third-place finish in the final MIAC standings. He scored the game's first goal in the 11th minute, capitalizing after sophomore forward Eli Ryan (Victoria, Minn./Minnetonka) and freshman forward Jacob Oliver (St. Cloud, Minn./Cathedral) each headed the ball to him in the box.

Oliver scored the Johnnies' second of the day and his team-leading 10th of the season, putting away a corner kick that sophomore midfielder Olin Franzwa (St. Paul, Minn./Woodbury) knocked down to him in the box for a 2-0 SJU lead at the half.

Monette scored his second – on another assist from Oliver – 7:40 after the break. Oliver maneuvered up the sideline and through a pair of defenders and passed the ball behind him at a perfect angle for Monette to strike.

Oliver fed Ryan just 2:07 for SJU's fourth of the day, corralling a bouncing ball in the box off a corner kick for Ryan to put into the back of the net.

Monette won a foot race after freshman defender Tommy Voshell (St. Paul, Minn./Central) set him up with a speeding ball down the sideline. Monette beat a defender and found the bottom right corner of the goal.

St. Scholastica broke SJU's shutout in the 83rd minute.

Sophomore goalkeeper Alex Keekley (St. Louis Park, Minn./Minnetonka) made two saves in 81:23 of work, while classmate Austin Ertel (Brownsburg, Ind./Lawrence Central) finished the game with a save in 8:37.

ANOTHER MIAC HONOR, HAT TRICK: Monette, who was named the MIAC Men's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week today (Nov. 2) for the second time this season, is the third Johnnie to score a hat trick this season and second freshman, joining Oliver and his three goals in the Johnnies' 7-0 home win over Hamline on Oct. 6.

15 WINS: Saturday's win served as the Johnnies' program-record 15th of the year. The previous record of 14 was set in three different seasons: 1974 (14-3-3), 1986 (14-1-0) and 2005 (14-3-3).

NCAA STATS: The Johnnies currently (through Nov. 1) lead all divisions of NCAA soccer in assists (76), corner kicks per game (9.21), goal differential (+60) and penalty-kick percentage (1.000/7-for-7). The Johnnies are second in Division III in goals (69) and points (214); third in scoring offense (3.63 gpg.), shots on goal per game (10.84) and shutout percentage (.684); and fourth in shots per game (21.58).

Individually, Oliver leads Division III in shot accuracy (0.711), while Ryan is tied for the national lead in assists per game (.75) and is third in total assists (12). Keekley is third in GAA (.434) and fourth in save percentage (.887).

SJU'S MIAC PLAYOFF HISTORY: The Johnnies are making their 15th appearance in the MIAC Playoffs, which were established in 2003, and 12th in the last 14 seasons. SJU is 8-13-2 in the conference tournament, including a 1-2-1 record in Collegeville:

-Oct. 31, 2006: L, 0-1 vs. Hamline
-Nov. 4, 2014: W, 2-0 vs. Macalester
-Nov. 4, 2015: L, 0-1 vs. St. Olaf
-Nov. 5, 2019: T, 0-0 (W, 4-2 PK's) vs. Macalester

A LOOK AT THE AUGGIES: Augsburg (5-4-7, 4-3-3 MIAC) suffered its second-straight loss to end the regular season – 1-0 to Macalester – on Friday night (Oct. 30) in Minneapolis. Freshman forward Liam Paradiso leads the Auggies in goals (8) and points (18), while sophomore forward Caleb Ibarra (5g/2a) and junior midfielder Christopher Plaza Alvarado (4g/4a) have 12 points apiece. Freshman goalkeeper Finnur Mercier has all 16 decisions in net with a 1.30 GAA and a .767 save percentage (66 saves).

EARLIER THIS FALL: SJU recorded its first tie of the season in a scoreless draw against Augsburg back on Oct. 10 in Minneapolis. The Johnnies held the edge in shots, 10-6, and came close to a goal on a number of occasions but were whistled for 25 fouls to Augsburg's nine.

Both teams had five shot attempts in the first half, but Monette and SJU held the pressure with a number of scoring chances. Two of Monette's first-half shots narrowly missed in the box. The Auggies were issued the game's first card – a yellow at 43:01 to end the first half.

SJU maintained possession in the second half, and Monette nearly scored another, but Mercier leaped to keep the ball out of the top right corner of the goal.

The Johnnies received five yellow cards in the second half, including a double-yellow that put them down a man for the final 6:13. But, unlike last year's MIAC quarterfinal game, SJU was unable to convert while playing a man down.

Keekley made four saves for his eighth complete shutout of the season (10 combined).

SERIES HISTORY: The Johnnies are 45-13-13 all-time against the Auggies on the soccer pitch, including a 24-5-5 record in Collegeville. Tuesday's meeting is the second between SJU and Augsburg in the MIAC soccer playoffs. The Johnnies are 5-0-1 in the last six home games against the Auggies.

A YEAR AGO: Shorthanded Saint John's upset then-No. 6 Augsburg 2-1 in last year's MIAC quarterfinals on Nov. 3 (2025) at Edor Nelson Field. The Johnnies played down two men on the field for the game's final 15:08 due to two red cards. The loss was the second of the season – and second to the Johnnies – for third-seeded Augsburg.

The 11-to-9 advantage failed to slow SJU and forward Alex Bowman '26, who scored the game-winning goal with just 4:37 remaining. Bowman was one of three Johnnie attackers positioned at the top of the box for a long free kick from defender Foster Conlin '26 and headed the ball in above the Auggie defense and goalkeeper on a well-timed jump. The goal was his third of the season, 16th of his career and fifth game-winner.

Ryan gave the sixth-seeded Johnnies a 1-0 lead with his second goal of the season in the 38th minute. After a long free kick from Foster Conlin that bounced off an Auggie, junior midfielder Thomas Theising (Minneapolis, Minn./Wayzata) played the ball wide to Ryan. He danced through two defenders and launched a ball into the top right corner of the net.

The tide turned, however, when sophomore midfielder Olin Franzwa (St. Paul, Minn./Woodbury) was issued his second yellow card of the game for a red from just outside the SJU box with 16:51 left. Sophomore goalkeeper Cole Hanson (Urbandale, Iowa) made the initial save on the ensuing free kick but Ceazar Daniell put away the rebound to tie the game at 1-1.

Sophomore forward Gabe Franzman (Bettendorf, Iowa), like Franzwa, was tagged with his second yellow card 1:43 later (15:08 mark), leaving SJU with only nine men on the field.

The Auggies came close to tying the game late, as Eric Riera hit the crossbar early in the 87th minute and Hanson made a sprawling save of Christopher Plaza Alvarado's desperation shot with three seconds left. Hanson made a career-high 12 saves to improve his record to 8-2-1 on the season.

Augsburg posted a 32-20 margin in shots (13-9 on goal) and a 9-7 edge in corner kicks. Each team received four yellow cards.
