Monette’s Hat Trick Powers No. 24 SJU Past St. Scholastica

Box Score

DULUTH, Minn. – No. 24 Saint John's soccer ended the regular-season schedule with a 5-1 win – the Johnnies' program-record 15th of the year – at St. Scholastica on Saturday, Oct. 31.

Freshman forward Grady Monette (Andover, Minn.) netted his first career hat trick in the victory, which sealed the Johnnies' third-place finish in the final MIAC standings. Third-seeded SJU (15-2-2, 7-2-1 MIAC) hosts sixth-seeded Augsburg (5-4-7, 4-3-3 MIAC) in the MIAC quarterfinals at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 3, at Haws Field in Collegeville.

Monette is the third Johnnie to score a hat trick this season and second freshman, joining fellow forward Jacob Oliver (St. Cloud, Minn./Cathedral) and his three goals in the Johnnies' 7-0 home win over Hamline on Oct. 6.

Monette scored the game's first goal in the 11th minute, capitalizing after sophomore forward Eli Ryan (Victoria, Minn./Minnetonka) and Oliver each headed the ball to him in the box.

Oliver scored the Johnnies' second of the day and his team-leading 10th of the season, putting away a corner kick that sophomore midfielder Olin Franzwa (St. Paul, Minn./Woodbury) knocked down to him in the box for a 2-0 SJU lead at the half.

Monette scored his second – on another assist from Oliver – 7:40 after the break. Oliver maneuvered up the sideline and through a pair of defenders and passed the ball behind him at a perfect angle for Monette to strike.

Oliver fed Ryan just 2:07 for SJU's fourth of the day, corralling a bouncing ball in the box off a corner kick for Ryan to put into the back of the net.

Monette won a foot race after freshman defender Tommy Voshell (St. Paul, Minn./Central) set him up with a speeding ball down the sideline. Monette beat a defender and found the bottom right corner of the goal.

St. Scholastica (7-11-1, 4-5-1 MIAC) broke SJU's shutout in the 83rd minute.

Sophomore goalkeeper Alex Keekley (St. Louis Park, Minn./Minnetonka) made two saves in 81:23 of work, while classmate Austin Ertel (Brownsburg, Ind./Lawrence Central) finished the game with a save in 8:37.
