A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Five Saint John's student-athletes wrapped up the two-day Wisconsin-Oshkosh Titan Invitational last Saturday (April 12). Members of the Johnnies' track and field team also competed Saturday at Bethel and Division II MSU-Mankato, where they recorded a number of national-worthy performances.

At Oshkosh, senior Jackson McDowell (Centennial, Colo./Arapahoe) won the high jump with a mark of 2.06 meters. He tied with Simon Dominic of Division II Wisconsin-Parkside but took first because he cleared the first four heights on his first attempt and Dominic needed a second try with the bar at 1.98 meters.

Junior Mitchell Degen (Brainerd, Minn.) finished second in the javelin, first among collegiate participants, with a throw of 54.91 meters and McDowell was next in third (54.79m).

Senior Max Lelwica (Brainerd, Minn.) finished second out of 14 competitors in the two-day decathlon with 6,719 points, 420 from Oshkosh's Charlie Nolan in first place (7,139). He started the final day of competition in second with a personal-best time of 15.12 seconds in the 110-meter hurdles and closed the competition with second-place marks in the pole vault (4.05m) and javelin (48.07m), and won the 1,500 meters (4:44.56).

Freshman Bailey Evans (Breckenridge, Minn.) claimed ninth with 5,511 points and senior Anthony Thurk (St. Bonifacius, Minn./Waconia) was 11th (5,320 points). Evans claimed second in the discus thanks to a throw of 35.55 meters in his third and final attempt. Thurk, meanwhile, tied for fourth in the pole vault (3.55m) and placed fifth in the discus (33.82m) and 1,500 meters (5:14.00).

Wisconsin-Platteville Invitational
Eight Johnnies raced within a large field of competitors – eight heats – Friday night (April 12) in the 5,000 meters at Wisconsin-Platteville. Sophomore Cole Stencel (Mapleton, Minn./Maple River) led the way in 88th out of 274 runners with a time of 14:52.53. Senior Eamon Cavanaugh (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park and River Forest) was next in 101st (14:55.32) and sophomore Vincent Kaluza (Cold Spring, Minn./Rocori) was 112th (14:57.97).

SJU's pole vaulters compete at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Bethel Invitational, while the rest of the team takes their talents to the Division II MSU-Mankato Open at noon.

Bethel Invitational
SJU's pole vaulters competed Saturday at the Bethel Invitational, where sophomore Andrew Withuski (Wahpeton, N.D.) tied for second out of 23 vaulters with a personal-best height of 4.55 meters. Junior Kole Guth (St. Peter, Minn.) was fifth (4.25m).

MSU-Mankato Open
Senior Kevin Arthur (Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park) won the 100-meter dash in 10.32 seconds, which was 0.01 from his personal best and is tied for the fifth-fastest in NCAA Division III so far this spring. Freshman Max Reis (West Fargo, N.D./Spectrum) followed Arthur in fourth with a time of 10.56 seconds, which is tied for 18th nationally.

The sprinting duo also contributed to SJU's third-place 4x100-meter relay team (Hansen, Arthur, Murnan, Reis) and its time of 40.83 seconds, the third-fastest in Division III.

Senior Zach Schaffer (Chaska, Minn.) claimed fifth with a leap of 7.12 meters in the long jump  and sophomore Cooper Smith (Alvarado, Minn./East Grand Forks) was fifth, first among Division III competitors, in the 400-meter hurdles (55.95).

Freshman Grady Minnerath (Cold Spring, Minn./Rocori) took sixth in the discus (44.88m) and seventh in the shot put (14.52m).

RANKINGS: SJU vaulted 32 spots to No. 8 in the latest U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division III Rating Index (TFRI) released on Tuesday (April 15). The rating index displayed the North Region's excellence, as the Johnnies are eighth nationally and No. 5 regionally.

SJU currently boasts nine top-50 marks/times in Division III so far this season, including eight in the top 16:

WHO WILL BE HERE: The Bennies and Johnnies are scheduled to be joined by Bethel, Concordia-Moorhead, Minnesota-Morris and Division II St. Cloud State.

LAST YEAR'S MEET: SJU won seven events and produced 53 top-eight performances – 42 in the top six – at last year's invitational on April 20 (2024) in Collegeville.

Schaffer led the Johnnies with two event wins thanks to personal bests in the long jump (7.14 meters) and triple jump (13.87 meters). Elijah Wade '24 followed him with a second-place mark in the triple jump (13.78 meters) and sophomore Bangaly Kaba (St. Cloud, Minn./Apollo) was sixth (12.24 meters). 

Senior Jaeden Frost (Omro, Wis.) won the hammer throw with a personal-best mark of 54.33 meters and finished sixth in the shot put (14.03 meters). Senior Joe Mensen (Hudson, Wis./Hill-Murray) followed Frost in fourth place (47.92 meters) in the hammer and junior Tom Kuriscak (Stillwater, Minn./St. Paul Academy) was fifth (47.31 meters).

McDowell continued his winning ways with a victory in the high jump (1.95 meters) and senior Alec Ungar (Eden Prairie, Minn./Chanhassen) was next in second (1.85 meters). Degen won the javelin with a personal-best throw of 54.81 meters and four teammates followed him in the top six.

The Johnnies won both the 4x100-meter (43.60; Moberg, Morey, Blake, Hansen) and 4x400-meter (3:27.36; Smith, Montreuil, St. Peter, Witschen) relays.

Jacob Gathje '24 crossed the finish line second in the 10,000 meters (33:57.46) and junior Nick St. Peter (Maple Grove, Minn.) was second in the 1,500 meters (4:03.63). Sophomore Lars Molenkamp (Almere, Netherlands/Oostvaarders College), senior Aiden Chalmers (Chaska, Minn./Minnetonka) and Stencel followed St. Peter in fourth (4:06.76), fifth (4:06.77) and sixth (4:07.40), respectively.

Sophomores Kieran Murnan (Lakeville, Minn./Holy Angels) and Matt Hansen (Longmont, Colo./Niwot) finished second (11.16) and third (11.26), respectively, in the 100-meter dash. Junior Aidan Morey (Omaha, Neb./Creighton Prep) placed fifth (11.31) and senior Joey Moberg (St. Paul, Minn./Johnson) was sixth (11.35). Hansen also claimed fourth in the long jump (6.32 meters) and sixth in the 200-meter dash (23.41).

Smith led three Johnnies in succession with a second-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles (55.58). Senior Pierre Deutschlander (Maple Grove, Minn.) was behind him in third (1:00.77) and junior Aiden Blaeser (St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville) was fourth (1:01.02).

Withuski and Guth finished second and third, respectively, with a height of 4.40 meters in the pole vault, while Max Doom '24 was fifth (4.10 meters) and junior Josh Johnston (Cold Spring, Minn./Rocori) was sixth (4.10 meters).

Kaluza finished third in the steeplechase (9:56.45), followed by seniors Ethan Leonard (Chaska, Minn.) and Joe Gathje (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson) in fifth (10:08.13) and sixth (10:13.06).

Sophomore Bashir Amoud (St. Paul, Minn./Harding) took third (16.16) in the 110-meter hurdles and classmate Isak Brandt (Eagan, Minn.) was fifth (16.57). Another sophomore, Wyatt Witschen (Monticello, Minn.) recorded a third-place time in the 400-meter dash (51.38).

Sophomore Max McCoy (Bennington, Neb./Mount Michael Benedictine) placed third in the 800 meters (1:59.15) and junior Owen Montreuil (Jordan, Minn.) was fifth (1:59.18).

IN THE MIAC: The Johnnies currently boast 45 top-10 marks/times in the MIAC this outdoor season, including 22 in the top five.
