WAVERLY, Iowa – Saint John's distance medley relay broke the school record and senior Max Lelwica (Brainerd, Minn.) leads the eight-man heptathlon at the first day of Wartburg's Last-Chance Meet on Friday, March 7.

The Johnnies' distance medley relay (Nick St. Peter, Wyatt Witschen, Owen Montreuil, Cole Stencel) finished third Friday with a time of 10:04.89, which was a whole second faster than the previous program record of 10:05.89 set in 2022 (Tommy Allen, Brady Labine, Alexei Hensel, Mitch Grand).

The relay entered the day 34th in NCAA Division III following its MIAC-champion time of 10:17.48 recorded last week in Collegeville.

Lelwica leads the heptathlon with 2,736 points, 11 ahead of Simpson's (Iowa) Clarke Latcham (2,725). He ended the first day of competition with a pair of wins in the shot put (11.88 meters) and high jump (1.92 meters). Lelwica, who is currently 16th nationally in the heptathlon, is attempting to improve his season-best total of 4,836 points recorded Jan. 31-Feb. 1 at Division II MSU-Mankato's Mark Schuck Open.

The heptathlon wraps up with the final three events – 60-meter hurdles, pole vault and 1,000 meters – starting at 9 a.m. Saturday.

Senior Zach Schaffer (Chaska, Minn.) competes Saturday in the long jump at Wisconsin-La Crosse's Final Qualifier. The long jump will follow the triple jump, which begins at 1 p.m.
